Help trouble shooting

Just got my Taco last weekend and noticed it was having trouble during acceleration. On take off it sounds like it tacs up a little too high then catches gear or something. Jerks a little then accelerates smooth again. This happens every time. Looking into it I think it maybe the Distributor cap and rotor, or the spark plugs. I hear I just need clean the distributor cap plugs. Got any thoughts on this or a better way for me to narrow down the possibilities? Thanks in advance!

I think you need to post what engine and transmission your Tacoma has.

 

All of the engines in 05's use coil on plug ignition, so you won't have a dist. cap, rotor, or wires. If you have the 4.0l v6, the plugs are supposed to be changed every 30,000 miles, so that may be your issue. Make sure you use the factory Denso copper plugs. The general consensus on this forum is that they work best. Good luck and welcome to TW.

edit. The 2.7L engine uses iridium plugs that are supposed to be good for 100,000 miles, however, I usually change iridium or platinum plugs at 60,000. JMO.

Sorry about that...I figured saying prerunner in my info bar would be enough. From what I understand they only come in one engine size. Anyway V6 4.0L auto is what I have. So there is no distro cap and rotor for these? Guess I’ll try new plugs then if that seems to be the consensus. So the laser Platinum wouldn't work? The only other thing I could think of would be in the fuel system…

 

access cab pre runners come with both the 4.0L 1GR-FE V6 with either a 5 speed auto or 6 speed manual, or the 2.7L 2TR-FE I4 with the 5 Speed manual

 

Wow had no idea they made 4cyl Prerunners...never seen one so I figured they only made the V6. Guess they figured all the looks with none of the balls would make for good sales. I stand corrected.
