Clean VHF/CB radio installs

The supplied PL-connector has a special thread that allows it to be easily twisted unto the cable to accomplish the required ground connection. The center lead of the coax must be soldered to the PL-259 center pin after installed
When twisting on the PL-259 end to the cable you MUST have the Cooper braiding laying on the black part of the cable. Then you twist on the end. Once it's on. You MUST solder the center conductor. Did u do this?

 

Yes, I soldered correctly. After testing this morning, I think there is a short in my current radio. I have perfect ground-ground, hot-hot connections with the antenna unplugged from radio. When I connect it, thats where my continuity goes crazy. Ill have to wait for my new radio. This current one was bought in 2004 and was handed down to me.

 

That sucks. At least u are getting closer.

 

Cable is wrapped in a silicon sleeve. Think it'll be fine.

 

im thinking of making a mount for a cb antenna that will mount to the head rail that screws into the x2 open holes and will work with a tonneau cover

 

Mounted a Cobra 29, but it's semi-temporary. I don't keep it in the truck all the time, only for longer trips. I have a Wilson magnetic, and the coax is under the floor liners, seats, and through the back. CB is out of the way, looks good, accessible, etc. It stays on the lighter plug so it's a 5 min in/out swap.

 

Also have a cobra 29 mounted, 3d printed a holder for the truck. Ran power to my battery and getting a swr of 1 on all channels, grounded antenna to the frame. Ran ground wire along coax. Coax and power are ran into cab through ac drain grommet. Didn't drill one hole in the whole truck

Not yet. Gonna do it when I get on a nice stretch of higher. Thinking of going to a cb shop for them to verify that the amp is kicking 400 watts

Is that ranger radio a ham or a cb? Which frequencies does it transmit on?

 

It's. 10-12. Had modified to do 11.

 

So is that different than 27mHz?

 

I only run it about halfway. As the swr goes above 1.5 after that. When I start turning the amp up u see the swr move up as well.

 

You gonna need a hell of a ground to run 400 watts

 

11 is cb. 10-12 is USB ( Upper side band)
LSB ( Lower side band)

 

Yeah I have it grounded. The guys that do the the state police radio installs did it. I'm using LMR200UF cable. And the power wire is a 60 amp fuse to the radio.

 

Isn't upper/lower sideband illegal to use
