Stock 3rd gen tires.....how long are yours lasting?

Honestly, thought it may have been a screw or something because there was construction on that road for months, look at the tire and its a decent sized hole in the tread through to the belt...Luckily I ended up paying for only slightly more than the tire itself...

 

What are you looking at getting?

 

mine lasted only the short drive to the tire shop, maybe 5 miles

 

I was rooting for them to shred on me just so I could justify new tires. They've been pretty good. They went through a phase with some increased road noise but that seems to have passed.

I guess I'll actually measure sometime to see. They look fine.

 

I'm at 25k now and they are down at least half from the day I picked it up with 4mi on it.

I expect I'll be purchasing new tires around 30-35k mi if not sooner.

 

I'm going back in time a bit, after having the new tacoma for a year and a half I dont really see the value in it. My last truck was a 2002 and it really served me just fine. I picked up a 2000 Wrangler with the inline 6 recently and I plan to get an older 1st gen 4 banger or ranger as a backup vehicle/truck. Since I live in Socal, i can probably get away with 2wd on the backup truck since the wrangler will fit any 4wd needs I have. Those are pretty cheap around here. When all is said and done, i'll probably still be at 10-15k cheaper than the 3rd gen, not including reduced insurance costs. I looked around for newer cars/trucks but nothing really appealed to me, especially since I prefer everything to have a manual transmission. It will be back to working on my own vehicle(s) again, so I'll miss the free dealership donuts, but I wont feel as guilty about having to have stuff fixed.

Driving the wrangler, it really is interesting to see how the power/torque/engine braking is absolutely fine compared to the whacky stuff that happens on the 3rd gen. And it is 17 years old. I don't know why so much has changed or why the drive by wire on the Tacoma has to have seemingly so much throttle control input. Diff doesn't howl either thank god.

 

I changed my tire around 28,000 they were do. Did not want my wife to have a flat when I am not around. When to 265/75/16 e rated tire . They don't work as good in sand with out airing down as the Goodyear's. But I don't have to worry about flats.

 

Correct. The OEM Goodyear with Kevlar has been about the only bulletproof thing on my truck. Not a single issue in almost 30k miles and that is in some of the toughest terrain in the country here in AZ. Cactus and Mesquite thorns, jagged rocks, etc. Even drove over some old barbed wire on accident...no problems.

 

About two and a half days for me. New wheels and tires right away.

Not too sure. Changed mine out to Cooper ST MAXX's at 10k. But with 10k on the stock tires they still looked like new

 

As of this evening I'm not the biggest fan of the oem tires. Picked up this nail or piece of barbed wire. Really not sure what it is quite yet just know it's leaking pretty good. Gonna take it to a tire shop tomorrow to see if they can patch it or plug it. You fellas think it's fixable given it's location next to the side wall? About 6K miles on these tires.

 

I'm at 40k and 4/32s per America's Tire. that's with SoCal highways (mostly the 101 [daily], 405, and 5) and probably 8k on fire roads and mountain ranch roads for work.

pretty much what I was hoping for out of the stock Wranglers.

I have a set of Falkens on order to go with the new wheels I got though. I figured 4/32s was low enough to get new tires.

 

I just replaced mine with 15.5k on them because one got slashed and was unrepairable. They were down to 5/32, one was 4/32. I drive like a retard though and pretty good portion of those miles were rough desert dirt roads. I never have good luck with stock tires. We'll see how long the KO2s last.

 

Have you had your alignment checked?

 

I'm at @9/32nds with ~11k miles and will most likely change them somewhere at around 3 to 4/32nds (depending on the season). About even mix of highway & local driving and occasionally taking it off pavement.

Are your tires wearing evenly on all fours? If not then balance/align, otherwise I'd just check to make sure they are at the appropriate tire pressure. There are other variables (road condition, driving habits, environment/climate) that all plays into your tire wear. Hard to say for sure, however highway driving generally wear tires faster than city driving.

 

That looks like it is *in* the side wall not next to it. Most shops dont mess with the liability of patching something in that area. I had a shop balk when I asked them to plug a screw, in the tread, that was near the edge of the tread.

 

I have 16k on mine and still have over 3/4 fourths tread left.. keep them rotated every 4-5k..

 

I put my own plug in the sidewall about 3/4" from the top about 8k miles ago and its fine

 

It would probably be okay, but like I said, SHOPS don't usually mess with plugs or patches in that area. It's not worth the risk for them.
