WALKIE TALKIE/ 2 WAY RADIOS AND CB RADIOS

Got what may be a dumb question to someone who is tech savey but can a walkie talkie/ 2 way radio transmit and recieve on the same frequencies as a cb radio (i have a motorola walkie talkie and want to communicate with the guys on cb while doing off roading)

No. The two way is on a different frequency. I believe they are part of the gmrs band which is different than CB or HAM.

 

The previous two posters are right. You cant with CB. But the cheap Baofeng HAM radios on Amazon allow you to communicate on GMRS channels. Technically they have too much power to legally use those channels but nobody's gonna say shit in the middle of nowhere on the trails. But I'd stay off of them in populated areas.

 

Get a CB or a handheld CB. They're dirt cheap.

 

So far, I've just used handhelds. I will probably get a cb, but not high on my list quite yet. Handhelds are easy, cheap, and require no wiring or installation.

A buddy was trying to get me into getting a ham. They are super cheap, too, or at least can be, but I'm just not there yet with needing a license. They have much bigger ranges with repeaters, but so far I have no need to talk to guys on the rubicon from my desk, or from Kazakstan.

I'd prefer to have a permanent install, as it's one less thing for me to forget to pack, but for now, the handhelds work well enough.

 

There are auto mounted GMRS mobile radios for sale now, that mount in a vehicle just like a CB but they communicate with the hand helds and other like radios.

 

Interesting, I hadn't heard about those...

seems like if you could get one mounted that did all 3 (gmrs, cb and ham) that'd be the bees knees, but also probably more expensive than just getting one of each (since you can get a handheld HAM for like $25, and a decent vehicle mounted cb for $40ish, and a handheld gmrs for $40).

 

CBs radios use AM band around the 26mhz range (which I think is around 11m), and the Baofengs use FM band ranging from 2m to 70cm. You won't find a device that can do all 3 unless you get a quad band ham radio and have someone hack the 10m band into the 11m band. Honestly, it's not worth the hassle.

For GMRS only, so you cna have a mobile mounted situation and talk to walkie talkies, look at the

Midland MXT105, 115 and 140. Personally, if you were going to spend the $250 for the MXT140, just buy a dual band ham radio and tap into the GMRS channels, then you can have 1 radio to do Ham and Walkie.

For CBs, I bought a

Midland 75-822. Honestly, CBs are inferior to ham and w/t in every way with the exception that people think they are what "real" offroaders use, and therefore are prevalent. I own a CB simply so I can communicate with people who don't have w/ts ham stuff. But for range, clarity and simplicity, all of our group uses Walkies (GMRS) and Ham radios that talk to Walkies.
