3RD GENERATION- BAD ROCK CHIPS WITH NO PROTECTION>?

If they can save a gallon of paint on each truck that's millions of dollars extra going into the pockets of Toyota's corporate Executives and large shareholders .

 

I agree with this, from what I hear ALOT of auto makers at the moment are trying to cut costs in this area. I know the third gens have a pretty much "hit or miss" paint job, but from what I hear they have one of the best probabilities of a decent paint job compared to the other competitors. I don't think them sourcing to Mexico for some of this work has helped though.

I wish that Auto Makers would come out with a Primer that is super close to the color of the base coats... When I first got my truck, I got two small rock chips after my drive to South Carolina. The Primer is Black, which makes it super visible on Quicksand or White. Lucky I had my Dr. Colorchip! After that, I went and had a company clear bra the entire front for like 350. Well worth it.

 

The beauty of the free market is that if they get too cheap with the inputs then people will stop buying Toyotas. Then Toyota will have to bring the quality back up or lose their asses. It all balances long term.

 

I have a few rock chips. Fender flares are cover though, good thing the OR comes with black plastic flares. I have Lund 5 inch bars but they don't stop all rocks. One rock chip is halfway up my driver side door. I'm thinking about trying Dr. Colorchip, I've seen a few reviews on youtube, however, i don't know if those guys are paid by the company to make them good ole reviews. Any have experience with Dr. Colorchip?

 

How well does Dr. Colorchip work?

 

Since when has Toyota ever been known for good paint on their bottom tiered trucks, whether painted in Japan or NA?

I have used Dr. Colorchip several times on a couple of cars. I wouldn't expect it to look like it does in the videos. At least not in my experience. It's super simple to apply and I found that it matches pretty well. I could never get it to fill the crater/chip fully. But, it's quick and will color match well and will not leave a blob. That's good. But I have not seen the same level of near perfection the videos promise. And I have tried pretty hard and am more than a little OCD. That said, I'd buy again because I'm afraid to wet sand a blob after blowing through the clear coat on my last attempt. (wife's car)

 

I have a ton of chips on my tailgate. I have rear mud flaps but I have a Thule bike carrier on the back and drive a lot of gravel roads to trailheads. I can only conclude that the gravel gets kicked up and bounces off the rack and hits the tailgate. Never had this problem on the Tundra. It is a bit of a bummer but at the end of the day "Truck". This vehicle is perfect for our lifestyle and gets us where we want to go.

 

I think it works well. You have to use it right. I wouldnt wipe it on and immediately take it off like they do. I usually let it dry for a day then blend it. Short story; Had a MGM 14 Camry that had a deep scratch, down to the metal on the back fender, roughly a inch long. Purchased the kit due to past experience liking it for my camaro. Anyhow. It took roughly 3 layers to get it almost flush with the area around. Unless You Were Looking For it, You Couldn't See The scratch. I like the system

 

Interesting. Maybe I haven't let it dry long enough before. Every time I tried to layer it the thinner just pulled the layered paint out. Thanks for the suggestion.

 

Did you have any difficulty removing the paint off the clear outside of the chip? After leaving it in there for a day?

 

Not really. just keep the pad flat and work it back and forth lightly. You want to keep light pressure so you don't pull paint from the scratch or chip. Scratch, you want to work the pad/cloth perpendicular vs. along the scratch. Works well.

 

mine came with the factory clear bra on the hood, fenders, mirrors, door cups, and door edges, some minor stuff, but its a truck..

 

WOW...ics & snow left massive scratches down to the primer? hope you didn't use a rake to get it off the hood..that's a lot of damage to the paint..

 

They used some maaco shit and didn't let the hardener cook long enough before shooting.
