    So, I noticed my 08 has the clunk when coming to a stop and then clunks again as you start. I found many threads pertaining to this. I read through several but never could find a fix. Has anyone come up with a fix? Has Toyota?

    Could be lots of variables. Don't know if your truck is stock, modified, etc....

    Could the sound of the brakes since they are the floating type similar to a Subaru STI

    My Tacoma clunks whenever I put it in reverse to back into my garage.

    I've just come to accept it since it's been doing that for the past 6 years. I've learned to ignore a lot of noises my truck makes over the years cause it's still running fine.

    - Reverse clunking noise = 6 years now
    - Chugging noise while accelerating on occasion = 4 years now
    - Wobble sound when driving between 30-40 mph, no sound otherwise at other speeds = 3 years now ( although it's probably the tire noise since I got them 3 years ago too )

    I had the same problem on my '11. Ultimately it was a problem with the driveshaft that was causing it. A new shaft cured it and it hasn't come back after 25k miles.

    I think the dealer tried that with mine but they mentioned something about the core of the shaft had separated from the outside of it. It was under warranty so I didn't mind .

    my '11 does it as well. Feels like you got lightly rear ended at stops on occasion lol. Then when you take off...."clunk". I was going to throw my gopro under the truck to pin point if its axle wrap, u joint, driveshaft ect.

    I was getting a noticeable clunk after letting the brakes off and starting out. As the weather warmed up and I had the windows rolled down more often I noticed a metallic rattle that would stop with any pressure on the brake pedal. When I got around to inspecting it I noticed the anti-rattle spring was snapped. I ended up doing a complete brake job but replacing this $3 spring (Toyota part number is
    $6 04947-0C010 Genuine Toyota Parts - Fitting Kit, Disc Br (04947-0C010)
    04947-0C010) would have fixed it. FWIW the factory only puts them at the bottom of the pad but when I rebuilt my brakes I put them at both ends.

    Yes, I forgot about saying I read about that also. I recently purchased 4 new retainer springs from Toyota and will be putting those on as well. Did it solve your clunk?

    New springs did make the brakes stop clunking. I couldn't tell you if two are really necessary since I had one and it was broken. I don't see how it can hurt, older Toyota trucks (mine was a 1991 previously) had two springs.

    My guess is that one works fine when everything is new, shiny and has some grease still. After a while one is no longer enough when the pins get corrosion and dirty.

    The logic is that 95% of the time you are stopping going forward, so the springs at the bottom hold the pads in the forward rotating direction. That way the pads aren't moving up and down every time you step on the brakes.

    Mine is definitely in the dt and there is no noise when it happens. It feels like I've got a weight in the bed that slides forward and hits the front then, slides back and hit the tailgate.

    I'll bet its your driveshaft. There are splines where the 2 pieces join near the front with a boot that seals them. There is a special thick grease that you can buy to lube them. Very easy job to do yourself. I work at a Ford dealership and we sell the grease for just that problem.
