They have had a bunch of swift water rescues this year and a few deaths because the rivers are running so fast and high.

yeah, Yosemite is pretty special. downside is, there's probably 3000 other people at that same scenic pullout taking that same picture with their happysnaps and cellphones.

HermitFest September 9th, 2017 Hwy 4 Ebbetts Pass NorCal Sierras

We have always enjoyed this free event. Camping free, music free, lots of free stuff from forest service reps, arts and crafts, nice river access to wade in. We have met up with a lot Tacomas, Tundras, Jeeps and others, lot of them go rock climb near by to gather firewood. RV's, R-pods, teardrops, tents, a whole variety show up. Dry camping but they set up porta-potties and have a water truck if you don't like river water or did not bring enough

Top of the hill, easy access from east and west.... oh, pass was opened on June 30th.

The event is Saturday but we usually stay until Monday morning and head to Bishop for the Mill Pond Music Festival.

Hmm, interesting - I've never heard that. In a bunch of these situations, that would have been difficult given the narrowness of trails (we'd have had to turn around twice). Also strikes me as strange given that the winch is (usually) mounted in the front bumper, so that's pulling from the front...

Would love to see more info about the front/back if you've got it!

It has to do with the differential gears. In reverse, you are on the "coast" side of the ring gear teeth, which are not as strong as the "drive" side.

Nothing to really worry about, just to keep in mind. Don't snatch/jerk in reverse.

    re: winch in front.
Way back when, when I worked on a commercial farm (40+ years ago) we used winches for two basic reasons.
To pull ourselves out of a mud hole... usually finding a tree up front & going forward (and we would never tell the boss we got stuck... again :) )
To drag something out of a mudhole... we would park & let winch do work

Also when you are winching the transmission should be in neutral so there is not a ton of stress on the drivetrain. Basically the frame can handle any normal pull that is straight on but the drivetrain is strongest in forward gears.

As much as I want to see Yosemite, it's all those people visiting that would kill the experience for me. One of the best side perks of being a Ranger is getting to see these natural beauties at times when you're the only person for thousands of acres.

    Just the basics
Couldn't agree more. I've only been to Yosemite once and there were far too many people for my tastes.

Nice! One of the higher mileage 2.7's I've seen. Have you done anything major to it besides routine maintenance? Also, do you have the 4 speed auto or the 5spd manual?
