How about a real Tacoma TRD Pro

I think it sucks that Toyota puts the manual T case in the off road 4Runner models, but not the tacos.

 

Pretty sure both are getting redesigns for 2018. No clue how significant for either. I know that's why there won't be a Tundra Pro for 2018, just like no Tacoma Pro for 2016.

 

At my local dealership a SR5 double cab 4x4 with appearance package stickers for $34,785 and TRD off road stickers for $36,742.

These trucks only have tow package, floor mats, and mud flaps as their only options. No running boards/steps, no tonneau cover, no premium/tech package for the off road trim.

If you compare the base configuration of both trims there is only a $2k difference between their sticker prices.

You may be able to negotiate more off the window sticker price on a SR5 or probably not. I paid $33,750 for my TRD off road that sticker for $36,742. Perhaps you could get the SR5 for $30,000 and it makes it $3k cheaper due to the dealership wanting haggle more on the SR5 models.

I think the new raptors are awesome and I plan on owning one eventually. But for the price and features, its hard to beat a Taco!

 

Dude, I'd wager the trd or taco is the second most capable vehicle in stock configuration next to a rubicon. In US at least..

I just don't understand why you keep comparing a Raptor or Ram Rebel to the Tacoma. The Colorado ZR2 is "the same thing" as a base Colorado with lockers, just like the OR is to the SR5 Tacoma.

Those two are full size half ton trucks. And also cost $10k+ more than the MSRP of the TRD Pro. There's absolutely no similarities besides them all being a pickup truck.

That's like comparing strength and agility and training of a linebacker to a gymnast. They're both humans, but similarities of what they're built/trained for are completely different and comparing them would be useless.

Raptor is built after baja racing. Tacoma was built to be a good trail capable rig out of factory and have utilitarian functionality. Baja != trails.

 

Comparing them aside...it is true that Toyota doesn't bring anything to the table that competes with the Raptor. I would very much so like for them to enter the market but I just don't see it happening. Toyota doesn't play that game or at least they haven't in the past. The TRD Pro segment is as far as they are willing to depart from the standard street focused trucks that they offer and it follows suit with their normal business practice - conservative and low risk. If you want something that's "out there" and pushes/exceeds the boundaries of what's commonly on the market you will have to venture away from Toyota. That's not likely to change anytime soon or perhaps ever.

 

And I don't fault them for it - this isn't 20 years ago unfortunately. It's just as easy for someone to take a TRD Pro Tundra and make a Raptor "equivalent" or competitor in the aftermarket if you're really into that sort of stuff.

As opposed to a fake one? You ARE comparing them or else you would have no basis of what you think a "real" Pro is or isnt comprised of.

 

When is Ram going to put a rear locker in their truck? Not sure why you're acting like it has way more off road capability; is it because it has 33" tires or air shocks and an expensive compressor and associated lines? My Kings probably cost way less to install than air shocks that can be punctured by a sharp stick and are way more capable.

 

I think what he's really trying to get at is TRD Pro models doesn't come with a different engine or a more powerful version of the truck, so it's "fake"

Well they do got the power wagon with front/rear lockers but who the hell wants to ride on trails in a school bus?

 

First gen went from 95-04 (10 model years)
Second gen from 05-15 (11 model years)

Typically most modern trucks are on a 5-7 year cycle redesign, and cars usually a 5 year cycle. The bailout and lack of sales extended the time frames a bit. Although a downward trend in sales is projected over the next several years or longer I don't think Toyota will stick to the 10+ year cycle now. Not with the resurgence of the GM twins, upcoming jeep truck and the ranger coming back and new frontier. Plus you have the Ridgeline and talks of other manufactures introducing a small truck.

 

I agree. Toyota keeps their truck based vehicles at least 7 years based on the past.
The current gen tundra is going on its 11th year. It has gotten 2 facelifts since then though.
The 4th gen 4Runner lasted from 2003-2009 which is exactly 7 model years. The 5th gen 4Runner is on its 8th model year so it's due for a redesign but Toyota hasn't announced a new generation 4Runner so it's unlikely the 2018 model is going to be the 6th gen.

At first Toyota was thinking about discontinuing the 4Runner because of poor sales in the 2010-2013 model years but I think a lot of that was because of the recession when new vehicle sales on gas guzzling body on frame vehicles weren't good. Now that the 2014-2017 sales have vastly improved on the 4Runner I think Toyota will work hard to redesign the 4Runner now.

I agree the 3rd Tacoma will last from 2016-2022 not because it isn't a good truck but because of all the major competition coming to the small truck market even though at certain points of the 2nd gen there were just as many competitors.
