ticking motor

i have a 02 taco. v6. it has a ticking in the engine and i did the screw driver trick and it is coming right from the center of the engine. valves? hopfully nothing serious?

 

maybe main bearings , that what it is on my 1990 toy4x4 its called the toy tick ... i could be wrong ....... just a thought ....

 

is that bad? does it need to be fixed? if so is it expensive?

 

someonelse told me they thought it was the lifters. its not too loud you can here it good when your on the hwy. have to listen for it when idle. gets worse with acceleration.

 

What oil you running? Is it worse at start up or pretty much stays the same? If the lifters are singing on the highway, then you should be able to hear a pretty good tap at idle.

 

10w 30 i believe. i can hear it at idle just not as loud as the hwy.

 

If I missed the mileage, what was it?

 

it stays the same warmed up or not. the mileage is 156000.

 

Sounds like the lifters. Please share the screwdriver theory.

 

I had a similar issue with my 05 Tacoma V6. I can hear a ticking/clicking noise that becomes more pronounced under acceleration. I found out that there was a TSB for the 05-06 model's exhaust manifolds. Supposedly some were prone to leaks. I took the truck to the dealership to have them check it out but they said the noise is simply the injectors. I know we have different trucks but another thing you might want to check would be for an exhaust leak caused by a manifold crack. I am no mechanic but thought I would pass the idea along.

 

using the screwdriver as a stethoscope cuz i dont have one. a guy on the other thread told me to do it to locate the exact location. i have heard of doing that before too but have never done it.

Its up to you. My truck makes a lot of noise but when I took it to the dealer to have it looked at, I was told it was normal injector noise. If you are seriously concerned, I would take it to get looked at. In my personal opinion its better to look like an idiot in front of a mechanic than to look like an idiot in front of thousands of drivers as you sit stranded on the highway.

If it seriously concerning you then take it in. I tend to be cautious, especially when it comes to my truck!

It troubles me that Toyota can call this "normal"!!
Injectors can make a ticking sound but I think the tick heard in gen 2 Tacoma's it something more. I have a 2011 Tacoma and it the tick really kicks in around 2k rpm and I can even hear it at hwy speeds. It's more pronounced under light acceleration (with a load on the engine).

Not all Tacoma's do this. The three 2010 v6 I test drove had no tick.
Mine sounds like an exhaust leak but I'm fairly sure it's valve train noise.
Why do most claim it's on the left (driver) side?
I suspect it's a quality control aka poor assembly techniques.
-OR- may be related to the variable valve timing mechanics?

 

A main bearing is more like a knock than a ticking sound....and it's very expensive.

 

i have a 12' tacoma and it does the same ticking sound during idle i just 100k on it, how much would it cost to do a valve adjustment
