What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I'm gonna guess your windows are sealed poorly to the topper. This is a pretty common grievance with most older shells, the glue or sealant loses it's elasticity over time. Your corners could be like mine and leak at the little parts where the front wall joins the rest of the bed.

This topper has leaked since the day I got it in 1999.

And it's weird how the cab side bed rail is lower than the side bed rails. Makes no sense. But I've added goop and strategically placed extra foam.

Either way... I've been packing in totes and dry bags for years. And this thing pisses me off.

If you just hosed it from top down then this probably isn't the correct answer in your case, but I had a very similar leak on top of my wheel wells. It turned out to be the holes under the bed rail that lead to the space between the inner and outer skins of the bedsides - whenever I hosed the wheels wells down or drove through puddles, water would get projected up through those holes and drip on top of the wheel wells.

 

I got my own joke but I'm not sure what that's got to do with Tuesday.

 

sounds like Tuesday he may be experiencing something similar... snip maybe? hence not looking forward to it. my guess anyway. Or going the way of Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner... can never tell these days

So, I was thinking (which usually turns in to a wtf moment), has anyone put a hilux bed on a 1st gen? I kinda dig the old style look of those beds. You think it would match up?
Point me in the right direction.

 

Probably could make it fit easy enough, body lines would be way off, 3rd gen pickup were pretty square.

 

I bet it might line up mount wise. Would not line up with the body lines at all though.

Remove the cap, get rid of that silicone bead and pull off that POS foam seal... use this -- solved my leak issue.

oh and in case it comes up, I also tried their Ultra Cap Seal and turned it out the cap wasn't heavy enough to compress it down - had a bit of a gap. I ended up switching back to the Super Cap Seal.

 

^^^and this kit comes with some butyl tape that you use to even out the height discrepancy between the side fender and side of the bed nearest the cab. So far it has worked for me as well.

Area51Runner... Do you install it with the U shape facing up, eg the sidewalls cradle the bottom of the topper or do you install it with the U shape facing down, eg the sidewalls will cradle the bedrail when lowered on to it?

If this works, first round is on me.

Just FYI, the silicone was a thin bead on the outside of the topper. Nothing to do with the bedrail
