What he said. And I think they are like a tenth shorter? So you should be fine even with a 0 offset in my mind. You would have to push the out pretty far.

    OK, UPDATE.

Drove 300+ miles today and when offroading. Fully locked left and right, also bottomed out my front suspension and no rub anywhere. Also got 20 mpg highway at 70mph (usually I drive 60mph and get like 23mpg on stock tires) and my conversion for MPG/distance/Speed is whatever the speedometer says x1.08 because my tires are ~8% larger than stock circumference. Tires perform well on freeway and offroad. Great in the mud. Can't think of any complaints. Attached pictures because pictures are fun. The first picture shows the stock tire next to new tires. They are touching, right up against each other. Others are from todays trip. 255/85/16 is great!

Have you towed with these at all? Any issues?

I don't have anything to tow with my truck. I have traveled across the country (and wheeled) with about 500 pounds of gear in the bed without problem. I don't see any situation where the back tires will have an issue, but I haven't tested towing.

If you go with 235/85-16s please be sure to post pics. I prefer the 255/85-16's thinner look to the stock tires but 235/85-16s have always intrigued me (less reciprocating mass = GOOD) but I'm worried about them maybe looking too skinny...

I'm almost worried about them being so skinny they're unsafe but I guess they aren't much thinner than a stock Sr wheel.

Nah, I wouldn't worry about that at all. It's a very popular size on millions of delivery trucks all over the road...and I think it was the stock size on F250 SuperDuty's not all that long ago....and they don't look bad on a 2nd gen at all...

Gosh the st maxx is about 10 pounds lighter in 235. Incredibly cheaper. Could I run my stock spare or is it too short?

It's not like the axles are locked, so I think running it for the amount of time you usually need a spare on the vehicle would be fine...but being so cheap, I think I'd just buy 5.

Such a hard decision. I feel like the extra height added by the 255 makes me feel safer about not wrecking my diffs. But then again more mpgs. I'm thinking 255s are the "do it right the first time" option. Maybe they'd do a buyback if i wanted the smaller ones.

Thank you for demonstrating that wheel specs and tire width are the normal culprits of rubbing issues.

Wider isnt always better. Neither is a 'hella flush stance'.

    Good job!

Also you have more options in 235/85r16s. Kumho AT51s (which I had on a Montero and liked quite a bit) and Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015s are a couple other AT tires in that size that are slightly less aggressive than the ST Maxx but also less weight and a little cheaper.

I had a really good personal experience with the Kumhos and Both EXPO and FourWheeler really liked the GO15s...
