The dealership that I bought my 2004 toyota tacoma from said they bought it from an auction. So I am wondering, why would a dealership buy a brand new truck with only 51 miles from a car auction? can someone explain?

Often used cars are better for a dealer in this economy. Auctions are the best way for dealerships to get cars for cheap and put them on their lot for a profit. If gives customers more to choose from when they come looking for cars. There is also a larger profit to be made on used cars purchased at auctions then new cars

yeah, but it was only 51 miles, is that considered new and how does an auction get their hands on a 51 mile brand new truck is my question.

I'd be interested to know the story behind this as well. I'd be afraid it was somehow salvaged without it showing on a carfax - crazier things have happened. I'd be climbing all underneath and looking for hints of welding that may have been done.

    you didn't ask them?

once a truck has been purchased and driven off the dealer lot it is no longer "new". it seems that you bought a used truck that was very close to new. i have no freaking clue how they got their hands on an 04 with 51 miles... some form of slut majic

They have been sending and buying cars from auctions for years. My dad used to organize it at the local Toyota dealership. Probably someone's weekend driver, the person went into the military, or was only used to move stuff. Strange on the miles, but I've seen trucks that have 250 miles on them that are sold brand new. My dad's '05 was driven from NH which is about an hour and a half away...

No it is not new. Some buy probably bought it and never drove it. Last year I bought a 1993 motorcycle with only 4,000 miles on it, yet the 2006 motorcycle I purchased this year had 18,000 miles.

Id check the history via a carfax/autoreport etc. It will tell you times the title has been transferred, retitled, accidents etc.

Theres a man that lives near my grandparents old place (they are now deceased) that has a 1969 Camaro with less 20 miles on it. He had bought it for his son as a surprise, he had planned on giving it to him when he came home from his high school graduation. The problem though is that his son and his friends drank after graduation and were involved in an accident and the son and the driver were both killed. The man has kept the car garaged and goes out every once in a while to crank it up etc. but it has never moved. He will let you see if if you go over there (or at least he let me when I was a teenager) but has had numerous offers to sell it and he will not. Now, I haven't been down that way in about 5 years so he may or may not still be alive, but I'm sure whoever inherits the car when he passes will have a valuable piece of machinery that will be for sale.

    New = never titled.

If the vehicle has been titled, it can be trucked off the car lot and is still not new, regardless of mileage.

Get the history on that thing big time...sounds like it was on a lot somewhere in New Orleans when Katrina hit or something...

come on now... you KNOW the truck was part of a drug seizure...

better hope they didnt stash the drugs inside the frame, or they are going to raid your house when they get out of prison...

    :ballchain:

either way, one hell of a score there with that little miles on a first gen...

Some plausible scenarios that come to mind (and I've seen over the years):

    - It really is new, nobody ever bought it, it maybe got horse-traded among dealerships, and ending up getting sold off at auction when it had depreciated enough (very very rare, but I've known it to happen).

    - It was written off the books for some reason (e.g., dealership flooded; it was damaged in transit or while being prepped); it was eventually fixed up and sold off at an auction.

    - It was purchased new and never used (e.g., owner died immediately) until someone sold it off at auction (very rare, but I've known it to happen).

painted door handles, bilstein 5100's front and back, K&N air filter. Precision power component speakers and Kenwood deck.
I would definately due an Autocheck on it. Carfax does not tell you everything. Autocheck is run by one of the three credit bureaus not sure which one. I would be worried about roll backed miles or look to see if it was down in the area of New Orleans could be hurricane flood damaged.

I bought a used 06 honda s2000 that had only 34 miles on it. Something similar to yours. I was told it was a corporate car used to shuttle execs hence the low low miles. No carfax issues. Bought it and later found out from a bodyshop(friends shop) car had extensive body work done to it that was not reported. Took it back and get all my money back plus some cause threatend to sue... Check extensivley or have bodyshop look it over.

If it sounds too good to be true it might be..
