Another Exhaust Thread haha aFe headers w/cat + Y pipe.

On another note for those of you considering same system I wanted to point out that about 2 weeks after install I noticed the powder coated black tip exhaust pealed very badly! You can image how pissed I was after spending that kind of money. I doubt my temps were to high to peal it off nor should it be able to regardless for something powder coat. I typically shift b/w 1500-2000 rpm so temps shouldn't have been a problem anyway.

After a few calls & emails to aFe explaining this issue (they said they have never experienced this or had any complaints) they sent me new exhaust tip for free. I am pleased to see aFe back their products and fix the issue.

 

My setup will be N/A with maybe the aFe Stage 2 Air Intake. I will probably try it without the rear O2 sim and see if it works. Won't be doing it until this winter though.

Ok now I'm at a loss! I was hoping the O2 Simulator from URD would solve the check engine light. I hooked them up see pix, very easy install. However check engine light still on. I used my OBDII and tried to erase code and not even 30 sec later check engine light back on. Disconnected negative terminal for 15 mins pressed horn for min and then few mins later reconnected negative terminal and still check engine light. Im pissed bc Im out of ideas and aFe guy who has a tacoma said buy the 02 simulator. Other aFe techs said you shouldn't need it but couldn't hurt.

Seems like you have a sensor malfunction, this one is associated to the first O2 sensor in bank 2, before the cats (see the attached TSB). Was this code there before? I would suspect that O2 sensor is defective. You may want to try to unplug that module and run again to see if it makes that code to disappear.

I think its odd that the "P0051 HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low Bank 2 Sensor 1" code tripped only after in connected the O2 simulator from URD.

The 2 codes that came up prior to this (and reason for me buying O2 Simulator) were "PO420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 & 2".

 

The real question is: is it the Rear O2 Simulator kit being at fault, or the O2 sensor has gone bad?

I am definitely curious to know the result.

 

Just asking, did you reused your old sensors or you installed new sensors? And also note that the pre-cats sensors are not the same as the post-cats.

 

Any exterior sound clips?

 

This may seem as a jab, but it is not. Did you install the sim correctly? It has a specific orientation, or it won't work.

 

I don't see how the rear 02 simulator could be at fault but its too coincidental that once installed code P0051 popped up seconds later and the previous 2 codes P0420 are gone.

My understanding is PO420 code is no longer showing up because of 2 reasons
1) The P0051 is A/F sensor (prior to cats) trumps P0420 since more sever (according to several mechanics)
2) O2 Simulator is connected (less likely as I've now disconnected it and no longer appearing)

I'm thinking the sensor prior to cats on driver side is bad (Bank 2 sensor 1). At Toyota for another issue (unrelated... CV boot that they replaced that re-tore in less than 500 miles after install) They quoted the that driver side front sensor part is $220 and another minimum $120 for labor. Found online for $145. URD also tech I talked to said its $163. So I am just going to buy it and install myself.

I more then likely will buy both driver & passenger side A/F sensors (prior to cats) since I bet other will go bad after installing the faulty one. They usually go same time. I may try and clean old ones but with 97500 miles it may not be worth hassle. I'll hold off on rears as hoping the O2 Simulator should do its job.

Yes I reused old sensors and yes I also disconnected the harness prior to taking O2 sensor so the harness wouldn't twist causing it to fail. But yet somehow (even though was very gentle & careful it some how failed???) I just don't get how these problems didn't arise until 2 weeks after. If I damaged it during install wouldn't the check engine light and that code come on right away? & why after installing O2 simulator would all of sudden Bank 2 Sensor 1 go bad? Just odd and infuriating!!! Keep dumping $$$

 

Also the O2 simulator only works on rear O2 Sensors. Different harness connections for front A/F sensors. I knew that but tried to install the O2 simulator on fronts after the P0051 code thinking worth a shot to try. Won't work and after that called URD to confirm.

 

Not to worry I didn't take it as a personal jab. We all can make mistakes so worth double checking, so thanks. But to answer your question, yes I made sure it was installed correctly. See pix and description please.

On top of that the P0051 is for front sensors (Air Fuel Ratio) not rear (just O2 sensor) where the O2 Simulator connects.

 

I'll try and get sound clips once I resolve these CEL/VSC issues with sensors. To be honest I didn't worry about that since reason for upgrade of headers & exhaust wasn't for sound but moreover for overall performance/torque. Sound in the cab was more priority but I recognize this is whats important to me and others like yourself would like to hear from outside.

It sounds great IMO. Real throaty and probably loader then most other clips I've heard but thats probably bc of full system not just exhaust/muffler.

I live in a residential area and just don't want something that is obnoxious outside. I am sure this is a pretty loud system as the rumble inside is quite present, but I'd like to gauge where it's at. I had an AFE exhaust on my Jeep and loved it, wasn't too loud or obnoxious at all and that was with the main cat having been replaced with a resonator.
I appreciate your help.

So I apologize for the delay as I have been quite busy.

Yes I replaced the front O2 Sensor and then that P0051 Low Bank 2 Sensor 1 code went away. However the original code P0420 came back less than hour later after replacing from O2 Sensor. So I hooked up the URD O2 Simulator to the back sensors and no more codes. Its been a few months and still no codes so I am optimistic that all is good. Thanks for everyones patience.

I haven't forgotten about the sound clip. I'll try & do this tmrw or by this weekend if I get a chance.
In my videos its sounded probably loader then it is due to most of time I was driving with a jersey barrier on my right (exhaust side) so it verbirated more & enhanced the sound. Plus most of the time I had my window down too.

 

I did a muffler only system last month using a Black widow venom 250 muffler instead of buying a catback system from anyone and it cost about the same. http://www.blackwidowexhaust.com/mu...nter-SKU-BW001-C/p/35648298/category=15730041 They are worth looking into.

I previously had a flowmaster series 50 muffler 1in/2out running split exhaust that came out of the back of the truck. I loved that system and the sound but it rusted and I needed to make another exhaust. I got my exhaust built earlier this month using a Black widow 2.5" Venom 250 muffler and i already have a aFe Stage-2 Si Pro 5R Cold Air Intake System Dry filter installed.

I really like the sound of the Venom 250 on my truck. The initial firing up sound is aggressive and loud enough but doesn't scare small children. It was 11F this morning while starting the truck in the video. With that said, your neighbors will definitely know when you have started your truck because the exhaust note travels inside the house easily. Just under normal idle while sitting at a light or in a drive through you wont notice it to much, but once you get on the throttle you and everyone around you will hear it. Getting onto the highway or passing anyone puts a smile on my face each and every time.

The biggest thing that I noticed with this muffler compared to the last system that was on my truck is how much "quieter" the Black widow muffler sounds inside the cab compared to outside the truck, It doesn't sound annoying or overly loud. It has some hum at 1500 rpm, so going 35 down the road you might have a little hum but not annoying drone. At 2k RPM while doing 70mph the exhaust is comfortably quiet and easy to drive, but once you bring the motor up to 3200 RPM she stops sounding like a Tacoma and makes me smile. The company Black widow is worth looking into to for sure.
