I just renewed my rental for the second time. I've had it for 67 days now including today. I am #1 at my dealer based on the fact that they didn't know what to do about rentals / loaners /etc the day they confiscated my truck. Today, I decided to call toyota and open a case because I didn't have anything better to do during lunch. I asked them how they prioritized repair parts shipments to dealers and they said it was first come first serve basis. Fair enough. To follow up that question I asked when the parts were initially available. The person on the phone didn't have that info but we did agree on a late'ish June timeframe. I suspect my dealer dropped the ball on ordering parts and missed out on the initial allocation given that some people with less time invested than me (it appears) have already received the repair.

To add to the fun, there was a major hail storm with baseball sized hail in the town where my truck is. I narrowly missed the worst of it by, literally, 1 mile. The Svc manager did note that I had a few 'dings'. So, I've also asked Toyota who will be responsible for repairing that damage. I'm awaiting a call from the customer service rep of my dealer.

My general feeling from the call is that toyota is redirecting everything back to the dealers and putting all responsibility on them. She was quite careful in her wording on everything we discussed.

Best of luck to everyone still waiting this out.

This is my personal opinion I set up everybody coming on here and complaining about how long it's been without their truck when we're all on the same boat including myself we should start calling the nhtsa I already done that part and also call the FTC between both of these government company should put enough pressure on Toyota to start pushing out those parts even faster out but these two places would have to get flooded with phone calls of people being tired of waiting for their truck.

Good call. Already done both myself. Also added to it are multiple calls to corporate as well as opening a case with them.

I've been without my Taco for 2 weeks now. The rental fees on loaner cars have to be costing Toyota a fortune. I can't help but believe they are doing everything they can to get the right parts out ASAP because from a financial standpoint this is hurting their bottom line.

That would make me a bit wary--the carrier assembly is fastened with nuts...

What dealership did you take yours too? I called Toyota of San Diego 2 days ago and they said they've been getting the parts and have been getting 3-4 tacomas done a week. Still waiting on mine. Im 13 on the list so the guy said.

Apparently in some cases they are also replacing the studs, which may be stretching and causing the bolts (excuse me, the studs) to lose torque.

Mine is at Kearny Mesa Toyota-San Diego. I was told I'm second on the list. My guess is they never ordered the parts till I called after 3 weeks of it being impounded. Now at 57 days. I did the NHTSA complaint a month ago. I've done the corporate route as well. No action.

Update to my situation, I took my truck back to the dealer to show them oil leaking from the fill port. They replaced the gasket and retorqued the fill port bolt. My truck is good now. No more oil on the pavement. Good luck to everyone else here on getting their truck back. I’m glad to have mine back after 70 days.

There are no "bolts" involved in fastening the carrier assembly to the axle housing...

Had a local dealer call me today, said there's an open recall on my truck asking if I want to bring it in. Didn't buy my truck from them.Think I will wait a bit. Would like parts to be in stock just in case. To many horror stories.

    Is your rear-differential leaking?

If not all they will do is tighten and properly torque the nuts--you can do that yourself with a 3/8" drive torque wrench and a 12 mm deep socket--or find a reputable mechanic to do it for you. Then if you do ever bring it in they will see that it's not leaking; check the torque on the nuts and find that it's correct, and send you on your way...

I would just let the dealer do it, especially if it's not leaking - they own the problem, I wouldn't do anything to change that.
