The Y pipe connects to the secondary cats. If you have ever seen a sectional of the factory Y pipe you would know how restrictive it is. Was looking for the picture someone posted of it but cant find it. It is a pipe within a pipe and smashed where it goes under the T case. The best performance would be delete all cats and new y pipe. But until someone can spoof the CEL then will need to keep those primary cats. When the spoof comes out it is just adding the UDR extractors that bolt right up and you are done. After a new tune of course.

Ah so it goes "headers" into secondary cats into y pipe? I've seen the smashed low hanging cross over that's in the stock y pipe... was one of the first things I noticed when I went to pick up my truck from the dealership..looked under it and thought wtf is that?

Only need to spoof the CEL if the state you live in cares about that sort of thing. Alabama doesn't do emissions inspections

This is really a matter of opinion/state to state differences in law than it is an absolute fact. Where I'm from in Virginia there is no emissions test, only a visual and this will pass because it has at least two cats and doesn't have any funny business with the O2 sensor like a spacer or simulator plugged in. If you live in California or another emissions controlled state you may have a different experience but I've already passed inspection once with my Spec U installed.
Additionally it does NOT set off CELs so why bother spreading the misinformation? An exhaust will only set off a CEL when it is not tuned to the motor properly and disrupts or allows too much flow causing a flow error of some sort at the O2 sensor and a CEL. The URD spec U does none of those things because it IS tuned to our specific application and works quite well. 3 weeks and over a thousand miles later, no CEL after constantly killing CELs with just the y pipe.

I meant removing all 4 cats. I personally don't care about the legality or the CEL. Alabama doesn't have emissions inspections what so ever although I do think it's illegal to remove the cats even still. In reality though you could literally not have an exhaust and no one would care. My other car has resonated straights with no cats and constantly shows CEL...been that way for awhile.

Oh yeah you'll get some funny business taking out BOTH sets of cats haha you're right on there! Misread first time around. Sure would make for a nice sound though. I hear you nobody really cares about how loud exhaust are until you're speeding and then they throw 15 more tickets your way for illegal mods

Must have been something funny when you just had the URD y-pipe.... Myself and others have had it for a while now with no CEL being thrown. Not saying you were wrong or anything, just curious that's all.

When we say both sets we mean removing the main cats in the "headers" aka "power extractors". These will not be removed with anything short of the power extractors that URD offers. Once you do that you will more than likely get a CEL. I don't think anyone on the forums has actually gotten the power extractors though. I only say what I say from experience from other cars. You can usually get away with downstream cats but if you remove the main first in line cats you will usually get a CEL if you aren't tricking it one way or another.

I do not see how this could interfere with any skid plate it is tucked up better than stock.

Could easily be the case, I had more than my share of problems with the y pipe, most of the reason I ended up going through both pipes before I was happy! That being said I've had 0 problems since Spec U install so that's good news!

Would you only use the y pipe if you already have a TRD cat back already installed from factory?

Is it not similar to the spec u exhaust?

Yeah, if you already paid $500+ dollars for the TRD Exhaust, I'd just get the y-pipe. I hope @Gadget@URD would be using the new spec-u y-pipe design, as it makes more sense as far as flow & design go, and also looks infinity easier to install or weld up in place, than the original y-pipe they designed... But honestly I'd call and find out, or just ask if you pay for just the ypipe, and have the newer design instead.

Now, I know the new design (spec-u) y-pipe has a v-band at the catback/y-pipe connection, instead of the flange type connection on the original y-pipe, but you could easily have a muffler shop cut the flange off your TRD catback side and weld it to that end of the v-band. Or maybe see if Gadget could pre-weld the older style flange to the end of the newer style y-pipe that way it would bolt right up to your current catback exhaust... If any if that makes sense... No???

Ok, here's a visual of what I'm talking about.
Right now your TRD exhaust and stock y-pipe have this type of connection:
    41727.jpg
This is also the type of connection/flange that's on the original URD y-pipe.

The newer spec-u system connects the y-pipe to the exhaust via a v-band (much better connection):
    1491_WEBL.jpg
So you would need either the bolt style flange cut off your TRD exhaust, and then welded to the v-band side, OR the bolt style flange welded to the y-pipe side.

Mind you this is all assuming you can order the newer style y-pipe, that comes with the spec-u system, as a stand alone item.... Which is really the million dollar question. And if you can, then you get into all this connection non-sense.

Now, I've already forgot what your question was, I've gotten so carried away.... Oh, ok, so yes, both URD y-pipes are better than the stock one, for the mere fact they remove the rear cats and thereby increase flow. I have the older style/original/stand alone y-pipe, as I was a early adopter, and I much enjoy it. But I do confess the new spec-u design is a better design/look.... Not saying there's any prefomance difference, I just wish it was designed that way from the get go.

    **Edit**
After looking at spec-u pics again, it looks like even if you were able to get the new y-pipe, you definitely have to get a exhaust shop to weld up a new pipe between the v-band and muffler... There's a pretty long pipe there with a angle and would have to be custom bend to match up to your TRD exhaust.

I got one question for you..
I'm thinking of getting the U-spec design pipe and keeping the stock muffler for now. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Yes.... Don't.

No point in paying $500+ for a prefomance y-pipe, and keep the stock crappy restrictive muffler on there. If you're not a fan of the noise, get a 24" Magnaflow, and have a shop weld it up.

I feel you bro. I bought Borla cat-back earlier this year and was kicking myself when I purchased the spec-u.....then it arrived and it was all good. Can't wait to install it this weekend!!
