    :tinfoilhat:

30 minutes at a continuous 30-35mph. Steady light throttle (flat land) is ideal. Don't jack rabbit on starts from stops. Or the best you can do.

You really do just need to drive around. It took a few days on surface street driving for me, but that was only because I was commuting to work on the same 2 roads.

Just take the long way home one day with a good mix of surface streets and freeway and you should be fine.

Yeah. But I recommend the drive procedure I listed above if you're close to failing smog, then deal with it later before your next inspection. Unless you have a serious issue, it'll pass... plenty of experience w/ Kalifornia

I had to drive a ways to get my 04 to be ready. 16 miles at a steady freeway speed and the 8 miles at street speeds. Plus a couple stop, shutdown, restart cycles. That did it. YMMV

I believe the thing that people overlook for the readiness monitors is how much it takes to get the catalytic converter up to temp. That thing needs to get HOT to start functioning, and until that happens, it will always read not ready. If you are only driving around short distances in town, it may not actually get hot enough to activate.

it is a series of readiness points that the ecu checks for when starting the engine, engine temp when cold, rpms when cold, and so forth. here is an file hope it helps.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, that was the last one to go green for me. I never hit the freeway, though - just drove on a 2 lane (each way) road with little traffic for 20 or so minutes (long way home from work), and that did the job.

I've seen that readiness file before. Probably takes longer to read through and digest it than to just go out and drive, lol...

If my readiness didn't go green in another day or so, I was going to come back and do the *exact* procedure outlined in the documentation, but as it turned out, my laziness and procrastination worked to my advantage... :)

This is what I've always done. Haven't failed in 15 years on a few questionable vehicles. But definately a YMMV type of thing...on my 04, i drive 5 minutes to the smog place and pass evey year.

There are a few monitors that require a multiple start/run situation and an overnight/temperature difference condition in order to reset so one drive cycle might not do it.

Please note that this is for the 1996 to 2002 Tacoma (not gen 2) but this post is pretty high up on google search for Tacoma drive cycles so I figured I'd post it. I've come across a variety of information for the exact drive cycle in the last month while I tried to get my truck ready for smog and cycles listed on this website (Antioch Star Smog, CA) worked perfectly without excess driving. I included the EVAP specific cycle below but the rest of the drive cycle can be found on the linked website. I also ran the drive cycle listed on smogtips.com but I had trouble getting both the EVAP and catalyst monitors to run in the same cycle but I may have screwed up the idle time for the EVAP cycle or the intake temperature dependent run time for the catalyst monitor (that is note in more detail on the first link).

This post seems to be high up on googles search for Tacoma drive cycles so I figured

@BarefootBuilder is there a reason your listing Toyota Drive Pattern 6 and 7 for EVAP Monitor? The Toyota TSB READINESS MONITOR DRIVE PATTERNS EG003-02 Revised, shows Pattern 5 for 1996-2002 Tacoma, did something change?

@taco 2001 You are right. My Google search didn't return an actual copy of the drive pattern from the service manual the last time I was researching and I didn't think to go look for it there. I had to reset it again this year for a smog check and I fortunately found the actual cycle which saved me some time by not running the wrong drive pattern.

Thanks for the reply, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at outdated info. I’m having trouble with the EVAP readiness and wasn’t sure if I was trying the right drive cycle. Guess I’ll keep trying.
