Not sure about the Tacoma, but I've updated maps on my 2014 Maxima and it did take about an hour or so to complete.

I've done handhelds and they did take a while too, but never a vehicle's built in.

Actually, come to think about it, I'm not sure if it can be completely turned off or just adjust the timer. It's somewhere in the vehicle settings in the head unit. I think I saw it somewhere when I had my auto. Got the manual now so it's a key instead of push button.

Were you able to find out if these units are related to Garmin?

IIRC, to turn off the auto shut-off, pull the parking brake, shift into 'N', turn off engine. Accessory power will stay on indefinitely, you have to leave the vehicle in 'N'. Placing gearbox in 'P' will start the auto shut-off timer.

    Good luck.

I'm guessing that based on the lack of recent replies to this thread that this DIY update method does not work for the Gen 3's.

Is the consensus still that you have to fork over the big bucks and buy it from Toyota or is there a way to do this on your own that I'm not finding?

The last few weeks, my entune nav maps couldn't find several home addresses in established neighborhoods, no problem with Google maps.
Has anyone updated their entune maps using Toyota or any other software. I keep reading try this try that, but no one seems to have successfully updated their map data?
Mine is 2016 Tacoma with nav option. I also tried these addresses on a 2017 Camry with same results, the '17 had the same 2015 map software,,,,,,,,,,,poor.
I'm going to the dealer and try the nav system on a 2018/19 truck to see if it can find these addresses.

Has anyone tried Scout GPS, I read poor reviews! I tried to load it on my truck to try, but with no luck.
With such poor reviews, I'll just not try to load it again.

From what has been said, the memory cards are locked and serialized. You have to purchase an official card to update the map data. The best idea that I heard is to pop out your card and note the version number, find out what the current version is, and then check out eBay for one version back. Folks supposedly sell their old versions for a lot less than new (of course).

That said, we have only had two cars with built in navi. The wife's 2014 Forester and the Taco. She's happy with navi on her phone. I will be the same.

The savings from not updating the map data can be used for a dash mount like the DMM or Hondo mount.

The update is $150? I'd take that $$ and buy a portable with lifetime updates if I need more than general directions of an outdated map. Toyota can get bent. Some of these Auto-makers should try not being greedy shits and see if the market responds with more sales or just happier customers.

I just tried the two addresses on a Ford nav system, it couldn't find it either,,,,,,,,,,,,,they all must be using the same outdated maps,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Nothing is going to change until they start using Google Maps or Apple auto or Android auto,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Before I would try a Toyota Maps update, I will check the maps on a 2019 model first.
I wonder if the SD card can be cloned?

I called the dealer this past week, I have 2015 maps... he said current version is 2017, and told me to wait until January, then the 2018 version would be out...

I saw someone complaining about the 150 or so, you should try to price a Porsche Macan map update, you will think this is a bargain.
