Fender Flare Question

I have a '17 SR, which of course doesn't have the "punctures" in the body panels for the standard, color matched flares. I know you can install them with 3M tape, but I came across this picture, and it looks like the flares are much thinner than the color coded style. Are these a factory Toyota part, or are they aftermarket? Do they require the factory "punctures" in the body panels, or can they be installed, for example, on an SR by just using screws in the existing wheel well locations?

I really like the looks of them because they're sharper in their shape, along with the black against white contrast.

That's just an optical illusion of the picture- those flares pictured (TRD PRO) are indeed a Toyota OEM part. I have had my hands on both color coded and matte black Toyota OEM flares and they are of the same mold, just with different finishes.

So installation would be exactly the same. Bolts in the wheel well, 3M to seal against the body.

Thank's for the update...Guess I'll have to forgo the flares on my SR...I really like the style of the optical illusion! They look thinner, and with sharper angles than the actual factory flare...I'm surprised someone doesn't make a flare that could be installed using the factory splash-well guard tabs in the tops of the fenders. Or is that perhaps how the Bushwhacker flares are installed?

I just don't want a "beefy" set of flares, but rather and less pronounced accent style...I can't find anything online unfortunately...

 

You're in the same boat as me, but most all aftermarket flares are way bigger. Toyota OEM is your only option for the subtle look. Maybe there are other products in the works, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Bushwacker flares are installed only via the splash well tabs, but they are way thicker, plus I really don't like the fake rivets. (Personal taste thing, I know.)
Pretty much you just bolt them on in the splash well and then weather stripping along the edge seals them against the body and (mostly) keeps them from scraping the shit out of the body.

You could potentially look at a set of more subtle fiberglass fenders (as in the whole fender with a built in flare), but understand that the cost of acquisition is just the tip of the iceberg there. Prep, fitting, and painting will set you back a decent amount if you have a competent body shop do it.

Out of curiosity, why are you opposed to using 3M tape? It's cheap, and with the proper prep it holds STRONG and is not going to ruin the paint.
The OEM flares on OEM flare equipped trucks even have a strip of Toyota-equivalent 3M tape on there to hold securely, it's not just the tabs.

 

There are also the Lund flares, but they don't really do it for me.

I can't tell if that is because I am used to seeing the OEM flares, but I just couldn't put these on my truck.
