Take-Off's and TPMS

I'm on the prowl for take-off's, and believe I've read every thread relating to Gen. 3 TPMS. All of the threads I've come across either relate to replacing the TPMS modules with new one's (expensive), switching them 180* from steel wheels to alloy (mixed success), or building "TPMS tubes" to fake out the system. I've also read about nightmares with the system not accepting new modules.

What I haven't come across is a thread regarding buying take-off's WITH the TPMS sensors in them. For example, if I remove my steel wheels, and install a set of factory, alloy OEM take-off's WITH the sensors left in them, I assume they'll either work, or can be programmed to work? I would only consider going with the same year (2017) take-off's.

 

Yup, you can buy a programming device to do it yourself or go to a tire shop and have them reprogram them. I bought one off Amazon for around $100.

I got a ATEQ Quickset, paid $99 on sale best price I see now is $119. Pretty easy to use once you get the sequence down.

 

The Quickset tool will work to program the sensor ID numbers of your new sensors into the truck's ECU BUT you need the ID numbers to use it. A separate trigger tool that you point at the valve stem will read and display the sensor ID's and also check that they are working (and wake them up if they are new). Any tire shop should have a trigger tool if you don't want to buy your own.

 

Thanks , this one looks ok, but I know the 3rd gen TPMS's are tricky.

How much do 3rd gen TPMS sensors cost?

 

The ATEQ VT31 is a trigger tool. It will not program the ID numbers into your truck's ECU.

New TPMS sensors are about $62 each. Tire Rack sells them as well as the online Toyota OEM parts sites.

 

Correct, I should have mentioned that you need the sensor numbers.

 

Been wanting a tool like that too as I have heard of guys having issues after rotating tires while other guys have no problem, knowing my luck I will have issues, lol.

 

I have a few more months before I will need this, so I am going to continue to research and monitor TW.
My last free service at the dealership, I will ask for the TPMS codes.
Figure the tool will pay for itself over the next many years of tire rotations and possible seasonal switch outs.

 

Im coming up on my first tire rotation and am planning to do it myself, doing same as you in watching on here to see of anyone with a successful tool.
