Apparently the Carolina Hurricanes will be sold sometime next week.

 

I thought that was bogus?

 

Didn't here anything 'bout that ... fuckin hilarious & sad though. If owners really don't make much money, then why keep giving raises ? I'm sure 90% would play for 200k a year ... what else they gonna do ? ... beats being a cop making that same amount, and that's with a boat load of OT.

Read the article. It's not fake news. The price tag and rapid close was fake. The team is likely to be sold though.

 

Forbes posted that article and the title because they estimated the Hurricanes were worth 200 million and change last year. If they sell for double it'll make them look bad to some.

 

"Hey, I wish Karmanos Jr. nothing but the best of luck if he does sell the team. Past losses have pushed up debt to over $200 million. So the team could use some equity. And maybe at some point the Hurricaness do sell for $500 million."

... but this part isn't fake and I really don't understand it. I remember AEG saying how LA was always in the red too.

How can you have a business operate when every year you lose money ?? Rich people are supposed to be smart, well smart with money anyway. Must be another angle to make it all worthwhile, like a tax break or something. Sure that was the reason that billionaire bought LA Clippers .. the Vancouver Canucks of the NBA.

Owning a major sports team puts you in a special club with bragging rights. Yes rich people didn't get rich by bleeding funds but for a billionaire the cost of a team can be worth it if the prestige is what they are after.

 

Long story short a rich guy from Texas who owns the Texas Rangers baseball team has a letter of intent to buy the Hurricanes but no one knows what the price tag is or when the deal will be finalised.

 

I've been bad with twigs myself. Tried out a warrior for the first time this year, was the QR1 and the blade got so weak. It's in one piece, but isn't solid.

Been a huge face of the RBZ line with CCM. Been the most solid stick I've ever owned. Each one I've owned has lasted at least a year for me. The top line always broke quicker so over the past 4 years I've gone with the second tier line from them and haven't been more pleased with them. High performance with much higher durability. Have one I'm still using from a year and half ago.

The Taylor Made blades are seriously no joke, have never broken a blade from them and have always broken blades, especially Bauer and Easton. Much recommended.

I do really want to try the True sticks and possibly the All-Black Hockey sticks. Those seem like they could be solid for $100.

It's no different than them buying all their fancy toys and building homes with the sole purpose to impress every one and inflate their ego. Though I guess there are some that just live the sport and have a ton of money.

But there's other stuff going on as well:

Many of the owners are actually just majority partners or even managing minority partners in an ownership group (a bunch of guys who want to sit in the Owner's Box the 5 times a year they go to a game and tell all their buddies at the club that they own the team). This spreads the losses around.

Also, at those income levels there are often tax incentives to having a loser or two in your portfolio. So much the better if it's a vanity business.

And let's not forget that most owners try like crazy to hide income and cry poor to keep the salary cap lower. Especially with a new CBA on the horizon.
