That title oughta grab some attention. :p

Anyway, the 2-piece vibration-isolation design for the 6-speed shifters is crap and wears out over time.

I since shoved a bunch of metal into the rubber bushing and epoxied everything in place to clean up some of the slop, but I know it's a temporary remedy.

Anybody know of a company that makes a 1-piece replacement shift lever?

C'mon, really, get with the times. This isn't 1925. There are better ways to stiffen your shaft without stuffing metal in it!

"Whiskey Shifter" was my alternate thread title but I didn't think as many people would get the joke. :D

TRD makes a short throw shifter. I had one on my FJ Cruiser. Easy to install and really makes a big difference.

first off, I doubt you really drive your truck that hard that you are going to wear out your shifter. Second off, you suck.

What's your daily driver when your truck isn't running?

Is that a 1-piece design? I've seen that one available but haven't seen any good pictures or read much about the actual design. If it's similar to the stock design I'll most likely wear that one out too and be out another $300.

You've had no issues with it?

Off topic, but wouldn't that signature be more appropriate for a Ford forum?:D

It is similar to the stock shifter just a shorter throw. I have a stock shifter from a 07 FJ Cruiser in my garage. It is the same transmission and probably the same shifter. I you need it let me know and I send it to you for the cost of shipping.

    Thread revival!!!

My shifter has now gone floppy on me too! :( After a year and a half driving with my URD short throw and only 43K total miles on my truck, my shifter is getting a bunch of play in it from this isolator in the shaft. Are there any other remedies for this issue other than what was discussed above? I was thinking I could just cut the shaft off just below the coupling, then take a piece of solid steel rod with matching diameter, thread it so the factory shift knob threads on it, then weld the other end of it on to the remaining shift shaft and everything looks stock, but doesnt have the rubber isolating the shifter. I was thinking some harmonics and vibrations will be transferred through though as thats why the shifter was designed this way in the first place.... any thoughts about that?

I cut mine and welded a piece of chromoly tube in place of the 2-piece assembly. Also welded the URD piece on the end of the shaft to ensure zero play in the shifter.

It's installed backwards in this picture but you get the idea:
    IMG_1365_298fbd213b30902a0839c8f262ce8f0c6779f02f.jpg

There's some noise from the transmission, but then my truck is so loud anyway that it blends in with everything else.

Where is the bushing you are talking about?

I know a guy who makes custom shifter bushings for Neons. Maybe he can make a solid polyurethane replacement for these.

Thanks Mike. I thought I remembered seeing that setup somewhere before and thought it may have been yours. How much noise/vibration is transferred? I mean I have M/Ts and a fairly loud intake/exhaust, but is it going to be annoyingly loud on top of those things? I dont want to have to crank my stereo any more than I already do.
