depends on your location. Some states have volunteer firefighters, others are very competitive. In Los Angeles, CA for example, 13,000 (yes thousand) people applied for one opening in the LAFD. Having firefighting experience in the military is a plus, in addition to a Firescience degree.

Well, both are very gratifying jobs but think of the job availability...Out here in Scottsdale you'd have a better chance of hitting the lottery than landing a FF Job. But RNs however are needed everywhere for every shift! Plus you work 12 hour days...Making 45+ a year and only working 3 days a week sounds chill to me...plus its safer

My fiance' is in the Nursing Program as we speak and she's doing so good! She's in the top of her class right now and loves it. She's a CNA at the same hospital I work at and because of that she was offered an accelerated program which is 18 months rather than 24...she's busy all the time and gets stressed out but she enjoys it :)

    Edit: I voted FF

See if there is an Air Force Reserve Fire Fighting squadron and join that. Get the top notch training from the Air Force, then apply for a job that you want to get. Not only will you be extremely competitive in the application process, but you'll have 2 incomes!

RN, because there will ALWAYS be sick people. ALWAYS......but then again, there will always be fires too. I guess I am partial to being an RN. :D

I'm in Firefighting Academy right now, and I can tell you that if your heart isn't in it, don't waste your time and money. they bust our asses every single day, I had 11 hours of school today, which included about 6 hours in bunker gear with air packs on, crawling around wet dirty buildings in the complete darkness. It's fun, but not for everyone!
