OP, all of my used engines have been between $12-1500.

My guess, it was something they did during that service. Either the wrong type of oil, or not enough of it.

Oil pump failure? That would explain the collapsed timing chain tensioner...

Did you have any extended warranty?

Dealers try to sell these when the truck is sold..

Did you check your oil since the service 2k miles ago, or since the break down?
    Was it full?

Price of "alternative used motor quoted below." Some quote of a used engine's price from something they had on file from 2014. No biggie.

Get a used engine that has a warranty, from somewhere like LKQ, and have Toyota inspect it and install it, should you not have the tools/space. Definitely have valve covers pulled, prior to installation.

This happened on one of my engines....

Ran for a race and few months of dailying, an engine swap found it. All bearings were still in perfect shape.

This has conspiracy theory all over it... proving it will be the hard part now that the dealer has it again...

Although it does raise eyebrows :stirthepot:

Thrust bearings. Crank was hangry. Chewed them up, and spit them out.

    No extended warranty on it.

Checked oil when I first discovered the problem, and it was full.

As far as conspiracy theories go, my original thought was placing a lot of blame on the dealer who performed the last service. I was thinking that this problem was present at the time of service. The mechanics, seeing how close I was to warranty/ non warranty, let it go. Thinking about this more makes me believe it less and less. Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems like the dealer would be more concerned about keeping me satisfied and happy......which maybe they did with the "great condition" comment?

Anyways, Monday a manager from Toyota calls with the final decision from headquarters. Wish me luck! Thanks for everyone's help.

Did you check up to make sure the oil level was correct and what not?

After someone touches my truck, although rare I'm not doing it myself, I always check up on little things.

As for the dealer not saying anything, they get paid by Toyota corp to do warranty work. It's pennies on the dollar, but they fish for warranty work. So in theory, if your truck is there already, is money in their pocket.

Since you stated you were on vacation 2000 miles from home.
    - Go to a airline website and rent a car at the local airport (unlimited miles, 2 or 3 weeks)
    - Find a good local shop that can do an engine swap with a used engine.
    - tow truck to shop, take family home in rental car.
    - use rental car for 3 weeks while truck is getting fixed.
    - drive back, drop off car, pick up truck, drive home. (or drop off car at home airport and do a fly and drive)

A used late model 4.0 taco engine for a couple of hundred bucks. You might find a short block in a pick-n-pull for that after every tom, dick and hector has had at it

I had a 99 2.7L that snapped the crankshaft at 30k miles for no apparent reason. It was out of warranty and I made the mistake of having the engine rebuilt instead of swapping in a used engine. At 65k miles, it spun a bearing. Cut my losses and got rid of it.

    I now have a 07 4.0 which I put 140k problem free miles.
