Anyone out there using an Amsoil By-Pass oil filter system?

I've strongly considered one in the past but always felt at 25k miles a year I'm right on the edge of it making sense. In those vehicles I always wanted to get rid of them within a couple years so I didn't bother.

However I'm really enjoying this Pro and want to plan around keeping it long term. So I'm wondering if this is the time.

Of course I'm looking for ease of maintenance as well. It costs me a day off work to go in for an oil change so the cost is minimal if it makes this something I can do myself in my driveway easily, in particular if I run a Fumoto valve. I'll pay the system off within a couple oil changes and start saving after that.

Fumoto is awesome, but doing oil change yourself saves you the money, why bother with Amsoil by-pass, it won't save you anything.

Based on product info the filtration is much better. It's also on a hose so can be relocated to an easier spot to reach.

Apparently you can get down to 2.5 micron filtration. There are a few variants of the OEM like TRD etc but nothing that good.

Is the filter that hard to get to on a 3.5? Are you gonna try to get 500k out of the motor? It should go at least 300k with just changing the oil regularly with cheap stuff

500k would be 16-18 years or so. I'd love that. 300K and 10 years seems more reasonable.

It's not that hard to get to. Seems a bit of a pain with the filter housing drain and the cap but I'm also looking at a Jowett filter cap with a Fumoto installed in it to make that easier and cleaner.

So at this point I'm exploring options.

At minimum I'll go Jowett cap with a Fumoto on it, and a Fumoto on the oil pan. Run the TRD filters and Amsoil sig series, and change them every 2-3 months or about 5k miles.

But looking at the 25k interval on the bypass filter and extended interval oil seems realllly nice. Even then I would go every 6 months or about 15k miles.

Had the amsol double bypass on an f250 power stroke. Great for desiels, I think overkill for Tacomas.

That is a good idea, beats these cartridge filters.

It would give the ability to use larger canisters but what I am really trying to do is get the 4-5 micron stuff out that causes most of the wear and erosion that standard filters don't get.

I would still go that way if I had to but a by-pass seems better for the price difference.

Amsoil has no adapters for the oil filter system on the Tacoma.

You would have to cobble a system together and it would probably be sub-optimal.

The systems they have for the diesel's are designed for each truck and take the oil to run to the by-pass from the normal filter area under pressure.

Gas motors arent nearly as hard on the oil as diesels either.

I dont see any benefit of attempting this and I am an Amsoil dealer who has sold plenty of by-pass kits to diesel guys.

I guess the universal wouldn't work the well then. Fair enough.

Do they have a screw on oil filter that can get down to 2 micron or so that is stand alone?

Seeing as how this truck doesnt have a spin on oil filter, the universal system, as Amsoil packages it, wouldnt work either because it uses a spin on adapter.

As far as Amsoil having a 2 micron filter for the truck as the oil system comes from the factory, again, no. The Amsoil drop in filter is good to 20 microns and retains its efficiency, so they say. I dont know what the smallest particle it will trap is, but im guessing its a bit smaller than 20 microns. Its a synthetic element which Amsoil is about the only synthetic element filters on the market.

And, like I said before, diesel engines and gas engines are different in their oil contamination. Diesel engines use a TON of EGR and what not to hit emissions targets. Gas engines use EGR, but not to the extent diesels do. Gas engines inherently do not have the particulate matter that Diesel has, hence diesels having DPF's now. So combine those two things(low particulate matter and lower EGR utilization) and you just dont have the oil contamination potential that diesel has.

There is a reason that really nobody makes a by-pass filter setup for gas engine vehicles... to me this is "a clue" that its just not needed or beneficial.

If you like the Amsoil products, run the Signature series and filter for the recommended 15k max and do oil analysis.

Up above there is a link to an adapter for a spin on filter. But if I can't increase the quality of filtration it's not worth the $200.

So then I'm back to cartridge filters, so I will try and identify the best one I can get.

    Thanks for your help.
