Roll up vs Tri Fold Tonneau Cover

I am going to be looking into a tonneau cover for my 2017 OR LB and I am leaning towards a hard roll up cover like the Truxedo or similar since it seems they would be more waterproof and still sturdy. I want to get some feedback from everyone. Where to buy, what brands, is tri fold better than hard roll up? The new cover must work with the factory rail. I want to get the best cover for a good price. Thanks!

 

I can't speak of the roll ups, but I just bought and installed the Leer Trilogy. It is an aluminum trifold. I researched them on the web, looking for the most waterproof and secure. I knew I didn't want vinyl. The Trilogy was more than I wanted to pay @ close to $1,400.00, but I am pleased with it. I took it to the car wash right after I installed it. No leaks so far. You do have to open the tailgate to unlatch the trifold. No drilling required. And the factory rail remains in place.

 

I have a soft trifold on mine and it is fine and it does have a tendency to leak but I just have to tighten the 4 corners down, but I didn't want to spend a ton and 300 was fine for me..

 

I expect to pay somewhere between $650 to $850 for a hard roll up. Also I like the benefit of not having to completely block my back window when it's fully rolled.

 

You are correct. That is another drawback of the trifold. Opening all three panels places them up against the back window.

 

Extang SolidFold 2.0 I've had it for a year and a half. Never been happier. And its not heavy. I feel like a soft tri-fold will rip if something with a sharp corner touches it.

 

But if you have the panels folded up, then you are most likely hauling something that sticks up higher than the cover sits anyways. So your visibility will be blocked by that object.

I haven't found that driving while the cover is folded up is hindering, but maybe that's because I don't have it folded up unless I'm hauling something too tall to fit underneath the cover.

I'm a fan of the OEM tri fold, but I don't have any experience with any other brands.

 

I like this one. Low profile, and you lose 6" of bed space when folder up. One drawback is it utilizes the bed rails for installation.

ever look into retractables? Pace Edwards makes a few...the switchblade is their base model, jackrabbit is a bit more and you can even get a full metal version

 

I have a Bak Revolver X2 on my DCSB. My main reason to go with this was I liked that you could still see out the rear window, when the bed was uncovered. I also like the quality of construction versus my previous experience with an Undercover Flex (lots of little screws along the panel hinges, that never stayed tight). It is easy to roll up from one side. It is not 100% water tight (but really have not spent any time to problem solve). While the exterior is vinyl fabric, the underside is quite robust metal construction. Factory side rails get moved down about 2", and are held by new brackets.

 

I just purchased a Bakflip G2. It's not 100% watertight but does a good job. You do have to shut the tailgate first but all in all I like it. $699 shipped to my door. It took about an hour to install. Would have been faster if
I put the bit on a drill instead of just using a ratchet. Keeps the factory bed rails too.

 

Soft trifold here. There is no full fold open with mine, only 2/3. Which is fine by me. I wanted something I could completely remove, by myself, in under 10 minutes.

Obviously I don't care about 'serious' security, as a knife will easily open it up.

Don't care much about the light leaking at the edges either, as the bed is channeled and the water runs out at a lower level than any cargo sits, plus I have a mat.

I primarily wanted the cover to keep tree debris out when parked and give some weather protection when hauling small cargo.

Works great for me.

I've got the Truxedo Titanium. Took a little bit of work/understanding to get it waterproof - I added the tailgate weatherstripping kit and you have to close the tailgate before closing the cover so the seal lays on top. Stays dry inside, and we've had some good rain of late. Got it on Amazon.

 

Right now I believe the Bak Revolver X2 is what I'd like to get. Any issues I should know about and where to get the best price?

 

Where do you get a good deal on Bak covers? I'm interested in the Revolver X2 or the Bakflip G2. Anyone have any promo codes or have a website they use? Or any promos for an electric one that rolls shut?

 

As long as you don't care how quickly it arrives, tonneaucoversworld.com generally has the cheapest prices. Just make sure you talk to one of the sales people through the webchat or call, otherwise the prices won't seem as good.

 

Same here. Also bird bombs. Seems like if I needed to haul something for someone I always had to go wash the bird bombs out of the bed. Now since I have the TruXedo Lo Pro on my truck not as many bombs land on it...

 

I decided on the BAK Revolver X2 as well. It will let me put our two mtn bikes in easily with the Saris kool truck bed rack. I've always had shells, but wanted a more open look foe my 2017. Tonneaucoversworld.com seems to have the best price

 

Thanks for the insight. The Revolver X2 seems to be more secure and higher quality than the Truxedo platinum and the Velcro sides turned me away. Now to find the best price and get it on my Taco!

 

If you want it really water resistant. I would recommend using some sealer on the bed rails. The little rubber price leaves tiny gaps where the bed rail texture transitions from smooth to raised
