Actually I went this route because I didn't want to tape anything to the dash, to me that's more permanent than my design. This simply sits between the vent and the bezel, nothing is permanent, no physical modification to the track what so ever, simply a spacer. If I want to remove it, I simply remove the panel, remove the vent, take out the spacer, reinstall in the "default" manner, and bobs-your-uncle. No glue or tape to remove after.

That is a nice mount though, kudos!

The tape would not be visible if left on, but it is made to be removed, but I'm sure it would take a non lazy person to do the work lol!

    Cheers!

    **UPDATE**

Decided to attempt a RAM mount (1" ball) but the bolt on version looked like it would be a bit much to mount, so for a concept, I simply printed a version with a 1" ball on it to test. I know up-front this isn't a design I'm interested for my own needs, but know others might like it.

P.S. all prints have been prototypes, so speed has taken precedent over quality.

    eFetL_Z_fIxFgp6WkVtbIiQhP3zQTPWpaz8MzePE_e9b6f19e730a2c567f9130aa98015bbd91752f55.jpg

I already know it sticks out a little far, but wanted to test for clearence, etc. I can probably push the "stick-out" back in ~0.500"

Here it is with a RAM X-Mount (small) - this is the only RAM product I own (for the street bike).

In the photos I have it positioned in the top, as that seems the most reasonable, but it can go anywhere really. Looking for feedback.

    Thanks

IMHO, the (ball) Ram Mount option will give the user more options for devises (cell phones, small tablets, etc) vs. the magnet mount (looks like it could only be used for a cell phone with a thin case). I think that either direction that you decide to go with; folks will like it. I do not know how difficult it would be to offer both options, or maybe a bundle option. Great job on the prototype though.

    that may be a
i agree. i need full vent opening and control, and keeping the ball at that position is probably ideal, or that's how it looks from here. could be a winning combination.

Thanks for the feedback, I do agree, the RAM (ball) option is the most versatile, but detracts from the "low profile", hence why it's not my favorite. As far as printing, it's really no difference at all. I'll need to do some more "final" prints with the RAM (ball) option to test strength, and get the stick-out right. Need to grab some more stock to cut something out of aluminum and test that as well.

Any chance you'll sell just the STL file so I can print it myself and save on time money and shipping? I'll sign a form that says I won't distribute it or a non-compete

I'm looking for a mount like this that can hold an iPad air stable while off roading on trails. If you mill one, I would like to test it out and give feedback.

Just FYI, That RAM mount is going to HAVE to be machined out of Aluminum... I have printed a far beefier version out of HTPLA, ABS and now nylon and all melt and bend during the day as the truck heats up (its been in the high 90s)

Thanks for the feedback and evidence, I was curious how nylon would hold up. My goal is simply to prototype on the printer, if anything actually comes of this it will either be milled, or injection molded (glass-fiber reinforced, etc). I know without big money and equipment I have no access to, 3D printing is not a production means, at least not for these types of applications. In addition I realize the forces on a RAM design are going to be far greater than the basic magnetic design of my original - this is one of many reasons why I continue to not want to go that route, but still see the demand from others.

    Kudos!

If you already have the exact same TechMatte mount, I can send you one of my prototype prints to simply try - early adopter (few bucks for shipping).

I currently use the Hondo vent clamp & love it other than it makes the vent un-useable. This is great! I'm in too with the ram ball mount.

Hey Op. Are you still experimenting with the mount?
If the vent is really fully functional, I would be interested in one whenever you're ready to start selling them.

Your Ram Ball mount design looks excellent, if you can perfect it with material strong enough to take heat & vibration. I need the use of that driver's right side vent to cool my brain, and magnetics and vent clips and suction cup squeezers like the Iottie fling my phone around the truck, often after hitting a cattle guard in the bottom of a dip at around 50mph. Roads around here tend to rough.
Looking forward to one if you perfect it.
