Talk me into an Access Cab, or out of an Access Cab

We are empty nesters,my J.R. fits fine in the back and I like the 6' bed.

 

It was in a public place so the bed was out of the question for that particular situation

No manual transmission available however so I can't get one, lucky I don't need more seating.

I started out wanting an AC but after months of looking I hadn't found one. My brother kept reminding me I needed to get a truck, he wouldn't ride in my classic Mercedes Diesel, it was getting rusty and he was afraid it might break in two.

Then I found my Regular Cab in the color I wanted so I got it. I have a canopy so there's still room for stuff.

Most of the time I'm the only occupant, trips there are 2 sometimes. I've only had 3 people in it once when I rescued idiots who ran out of gas because this woman let her stupid kid drive and he missed their destination which was very obvious. Then she tried to sell me a Lowes Home Depot gift card, I explained I didn't buy stuff there since I don't have a house at the moment. I sorta felt exploited, I don't think the stupid kid learned anything. He was kinda weird he was carrying a claw hammer.

 

There is no DCLB with a manual transmission and I've sworn never to own an automatic, True they're better now and get almost as good mileage as a manual but they cost more ($2000?) to buy and have lots of quirks and issues and they're a black box I don't understand just waiting to have a costly breakdown. Just changing the transmission fluid is a major job. I've a great believer in changing fluids, I even put AmsOil ATF in my power steering.

$2000 / $2.50 (current price of gas here) = 800 gallons of gas. Enough to drive 14,400 miles at 18 mpg.

 

I question the bathroom stall being better. It's not if it's a porta-potty.

 

Just a few questions. I'm also on the fence. Does the access cab have the same space behind the rear seats as the double cab? Would like to put in a sub, especially since the JBL audio isn't an option on the AC. Also, with the seat bottoms removed, what has more room? Looks like the Double cab has some storage bins. Do dogs usually ride on the seats?

An AC and a double cab Short bed have the same wheel base. They are the same length. AC has only a 62 inch bed and the DCSB has this same space used for the bigger back seat. The DCLB has a 62 inch bed as well hence the longer wheel base.
Simply answered --you get the same space inside one and outside on the other. Exception being the DCLB. some say the DCLB looks weird --but its got both length and space. GO look at "em" in person. Its your decision.
One more note --some say they have a "ACLB" -- ALL ACCESS cabs are long beds.
There ain't no 3rd gen ACSB's --yet

 

And there never will be will ACSB lol!

Regarding subs the oem audio sub is made to fit on the rear space between the seat bottoms. Most people flip up the rear seats and build a platform with indoor/outdoor carpet for their pets. There is no storage behind access cab jump seats. The 2 seat backs are fixed to the rear wall. There is space on the back wall between the seat backs to mount a sub.

 

Whatever you do, if you get the DCSB, opt out of the tri-fold cover.

I've got it on mine and while I don't have a burning desire to sell it, I always find that completely kills the usability of the bed length, and it's a bit cumbersome to remove. I use my large snowblower at my Mom's house in the winter months and with the cover on, the snowblower has to sit out on the tailgate rather than tight up against the cab. The tonneau is nice because you don't end up with a bed full of snow, but I'm always finding it's always taking up too much of the bed.

As far as the debate, they both have their merits. I've had both. When I bought my AccessCab I was unmarried and I figured we'd always have a family car for the kids. When that got stuffed, I really had my choice of what I wanted. Ultimately the sunroof won out, even though I do think the AC is a better looking truck. Although the second you lift and put 285s on a DCLB, you've got a great looking truck. I always felt DCSBs looked better at stock height but DCLBs look better lifted.

I don't think you can really go wrong either way, but think long and hard about that tri-fold cover whichever way you go.

I thought I wanted 4 doors...current ride is a Volvo wagon, and I find the backseat and doors handy even though I hardly ever have passengers. Long bed because I think the SB looks kind of silly.

I just looked at a DCLB today, maybe I need to check out an AC too.

 

I have and Access Cab (as you can see from the picture) There is indeed less room behind the seats in the AC compared to a DC. The question is - do you want to haul 3 or 4 people? If you do, the 4 door/DC is the way to go. There are small jump seats in the AC, but they are only suitable for very small people or kids. Yes there are cubbies in the back (The seats fold down over them. I use them for tow-strap, jumper cables and other items (the factory jack etc goes there too). You certainly could build a platform for your dogs that should work well unless they are really big. As for the Bed - You can get a long bed in a DC/4 door (Like the AC has - but its a VERY long truck. The short bed is almost too short to be of much value (IMHO) Mine is a Sport with an MT (The only way to go)- Clay

 

Correction, Access Cab jump seats are suitable for average sized adults when driver and front passenger are not unreasonable with the amount of leg room they take up.

 

I mean the space between the rear seat and the back of the cabin. This picture is a double cab rear passenger side. Rear driver side also has a space behind the seat. What does an access cab have there?
