SAW vs Icon? Others?

I was considering OME, but I'm pretty much decided to definitely go to a "nicer" coilover.

Any thoughts on SAW vs Icon? I've read that the SAW ride is softer, but I also read that the Icons absorbed fast impacts faster (these seem to contradict each other?).

Also considering fox, king, etc, but the fact that Wheeler's has 2.5" SAWs for $969/pair instead of $1200 is pretty appealing.

 

I had both on my truck. SAW was alright. Love the Icons. My SAW springs had a nasty sag on them, I had to expose 2.5" of thread for 2" of total lift. Needless to say I was not happy with them.

Icons will ride a little stiffer and perform better off road. I would take ICON anyday over SAW, they are almost the same price thru wheeler's.

haha i was in the same boat as you, and my conclusion from what i gathered from many members is the icons run a lil stiff and saw's and king dont. as long as your not jumping the truck every day or some hardcore racing youll be fine with w/e choice you go with. the only real diff between them is how they are built internally. never the less it is all the same. id go with which ones you can get cheaper to be honest bc, once again they are both quality c/o. think of finding a c/o the same as the tacoma vs frontier, everyone has there own opinion about each but in the end they are both long lasting trucks and look nice. or the chevy vs ford. same thing. i went with KING.

 

also depending on how high you set the c/o will determine the stiffnes of your ride

 

im running sway a ways and they perform well... i think any 2.5 coil over is gonna give you what you want off road!

 

What can I crank the Icon's at? Is there a setting around 1.5" that will give me a super cush ride? That would rule!

Actually, either one

 

you can set them up to 0-3 inch. less crank=softer ride, more crank=stiffer ride

 

no matter what route you go, itll be better than the stock ride

OK, i knew they were adjustable, I didn't know if the adjustment could be set anywhere... I thought bilstein's, for example, could only go to certain heights like 1.75, 2.5, etc.

Wasn't me, birdTRD. Fair comment, but I didn't see much discussion of these two particular coilovers.

pretty much all the info you need on the icons. i've had 2 diff sets of icons on my 2004 and i have been more than happy with them. go with either king or icon

 

bilstein adjust are just like the stock strut with the exception of the diff heights levels,there are 3 pre-determined measurements. now a coilver has a spanner( kinda like a bolt on a screw) which can be adjusted however you would like( just like a screw on a bolt)

 

Well, thanks everyone, good information.

Now I just need to save up about $1600 for icons + total chaos UCAs, and figure out what to do in the rear - I was thinking just 5100's and a wheeler's 3-piece progressive add-a-leaf, the Dakar's are too $$$. Anybody have any other recommendations for rear shocks? Icon's all around, maybe?

*sigh* And a grand or so for wrangler duratracs. Does anyone have any money they'd like to give me?

 

icons look great bc of the black finish but you can score some KING form DSM for a better price plus dsm warrentees there king c/o which no one does, which why i went that route

 

I have Duratracs and love them!!!
