Hey guys, so I have a 2001 Tacoma double cab 4x4 and i have done some test and I am currently getting about 14-15 MPG when i should be getting close to 19-20. Is there things on my truck I should replace that will give me that fuel efficiency back? I don't run my truck hard at all, normally stay at 2kRPM's. Thanks!

Fluids and filters, tire pressure, cut weight by losing unnecessary items. Reduce rotating mass by moving to lighter wheel/tire combo. Clean MAF sensor. Make sure you're buying good fuel from somewhere with high turnover and low water content. That's about all you can do for these trucks.

Hey Vinner! I have a '03 3.4 Auto and I average about 16. It's mostly all city and very little highway. I've used full synthetic since I purchased new, change the air filter/pcv valve once a year and running stock tires. I just don't think the 3.4's were meant to get great gas mileage

Intake system: Replace air filter if dirty, clean the MAF, clean the throttle body thoroughly. Clean IAC too while you have it apart.

Spark Plugs: Make sure they are changed according to spec.

Tire Pressure: Make sure the tires are properly inflated.

Gas Cap: Make sure you are getting a good seal.

15-16 is average. 19-20 is pretty unrealistic unless you're doing a stead 55mph with a favorable wind with no stops. The best mod you can do it learn to drive more efficiently. You can read on those tip endlessly on various forums.

When I first got my '04 v6 TRD 4x4 last year I was averaging 20mpg on the freeway with the supercharger on and (stock size) E rated tires.

After I put my lift on, sliders, roof rack with lights and slightly 1/2" bigger tires I'm averaging about 16mpg now. Slightly under 18 on the freeway. These trucks are particularly sensitive to changes in weight (especially at the wheels) and aerodynamics it seems.

Oh and if you go over 70 on the freeway your mpg's are going to tank big time. I'm running 2.7k-ish RPMs at 70mph in 5th gear, not so great by today's vehicle standards. 65mph is probably the best top speed to go at, here in SoCal though that's not always possible without getting run over even in the slow lane.

Automatic? Lift, oversize tires? Or all stock?

    www.fueleconomy.gov original estimates were 17/19.

The formulary (for everything) changed a few years ago, and the revised rating for that truck is 15/18.

Depending on modifications, tuneups (or lack thereof) and other factors, you may or may not be able to exceed those estimates.

However, you're not far off, assuming your 'testing' methods are accurate.

Get a daily driver...that's the only way to drastically increase your fuel economy. Also this is the best mod you can do for your truck. Between my daily driver and my truck I average about 38mpg. The daily gets 46, the truck gets about 15.

Looks like his DD is a 2009 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom.

But you can say hello to me, another Prius owner.

Nah...motorcycle. If it weren't for lane splitting in CA I'd have a Prius. That's my second favorite car after the Tacoma.

Ive become obsessed with calculating my gas mileage. Been doing it for years. The two things that have given me better gas mileage that was noticable was a AFE dry filter and when I bought Michelin ltx m/s 2. I also have a double cab trd. Just filled up and got 19.1. I average 19.3. I avg 21 on highway only trips. Other things that may help u that others have mentioned already is tire pressure, good alignment, keep it under 70. Maybe change fuel filter and if your o2 sensor is bad change it. Fuel system cleaner ? Ive read where those have helped others. My 02 sensor light is on but doesnt effect my mileage. Good luck with improving your mileage.

A tune up ? I just recently replaced my plugs and air filter and my mpg went from 17.2 to 20.4 over 4 tanks of gas . I have a 4x4 TRD Off-road , 4.0 v6 automatic, 265/70R16 tires. The 20.4 is a mix of city and highway . I haven't been on a trip yet with the new plugs but I bet they are up around 22-23 mpg on the highway . I've been super stoked about my mpg increase . I still want to clean my MAF sensor , throttle body and maybe drop a bottle of Techron in the tank . See if I can squeeze a few more mpg out of the big truck .

Its a truck, if you want good gas mileage, sell it and buy a Honda Civic.
