It's an oil filter, it's doing its job.

I get it. Seeing bits of metal in your filter or pan makes you uneasy but Toyota and all other auto manufacturers put a ton of research into these kinds of things.

If you sleep easier at night doing an oil change at 500 miles, do it!

Thank you for posting this. I couldn't decided whether to change the oil and filter now or wait for the scheduled maintenance. I have 562 miles on my Tacoma. I replaced the oil and filter today. The metal debris on the bottom of the oil filter housing was no where close to yours. I was going to take a picture but the metal particles may not have been visible. I did see some metal particles in the pleats of the oil filter but not much. I'm still glad I replaced the oil and filter.

    yep..
Self deburring and mating parts, I agree with an early 1st oil change. Probably rarely done and may be unnecessary but I'd sleep better at night.

I'm too stuck in the old-school mentality to ever go to 10,000 mile intervals.
Currently I'm doing 5000 interval changes, even though my last oil analysis suggested that I should try going to 7500.

Any advantage to the TRD filter over the regular OE filter?

Isn't the first oil change due at 5,000 miles according to Toyota?

Nope. 10,000 or 12 months, whichever comes first. There is a subsection about extreme operating conditions, not sure what the miles is on that.

This is why I'll always go for the early first oil change. I usually have it done at around 1500 miles.

Everyone here understands the definition and meaning of the word "Filter," right?

These flakes look very, very thin, at least in the pictures. I wouldn't even worry about it. Like you said, new engine.

If you drive normal and mostly highway I would do 7500 oil change . I drive normal but drive a lot of inclines and tow a boat most weekend so I change mine every 5,000 . Also my tundra had little shaving first 3 oil changes , like smitty said filter is doing its job

It is kind of interesting how I never read in these discussions about filter material breakdown/blockage. <-- this is the reason I would change the filter early. The synthetic oils now are really stable and hold up very well to time and heat compared to dinosaur oil.

Should just do it once at 1000 miles (when break-in is complete according to the owner's manual) and continue with normal 5000-mile changes thereafter. You just put in a $13 TRD filter and will be removing it after another 500 miles?

Should've spent the time and effort on replacing the rear diff oil instead. Break-in is 500 miles according to the owner's manual and industry literature. There is no filter and no heat exchanger.

Perhaps we need filter filters, so as to keep our main filters free of debris.
