I wish Toyota would re-release the 1st gen....

The same general size, weight and reliability but with updated design, the new engines, maybe even a 3.5-4.5 turbo diesel option that cranks out competative power, and a lower price that the current taco. Would probably have to name it something other than the Tacoma.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 2nd gen but it's a big bigger than the old taco. Really not in the same size class. I like the compact, efficient size and weight of the older one.

 

not gonna lie I love my 10 Tacoma the size of it is the same as a 05 Tundra, It is almost in its own class perfect size for me

 

yeah thats kinda what i mean though. Mid size trucks now are the same size full trucks were 5-8 years ago. A full size trucks are gigantic. What about people that liked the size of mid size trucks 5-8 years ago? if they got 20mpg is 03 im sure they can get 25 now. and maybe 30 if they had a diesel.

 

I'm glad they upped the size. I didn't want a full size truck and the prvious gen's were to cramped in the cab.

 

It sounds like the op Wants a small size truck not a mid size truck.
People with the small size truck preferance is the only reason why the ford ranger is still here.I mean think about it the ford ranger comes in last in most reviews. I have wondered why none of the company's had three models of trucks.

 

i like my 04, the 05 - 10 the front is just so big, i like the small fronts. dont get my wrong i like the new models but always will like the smaller truck that yota came out with, they are just trying to compete with ford and dodge , they just look to big

Yep, i do too. I love my first gen, and espically if they went back to not everything being electronic, like locking hubs and manual shift Tranfercase. Everything seems so much more reliable.

 

Yea the quality is a big issue, cause i hear about all the 2nd gens breaking down.

Plus it would be nice to have a brand new one.

 

this makes me think about the people that love the old minis and hate the new ones..its just time to move on

 

They're kinda hard to find, and they won't be around forever. Doesn't help that toyota is buying back a lot of the ones with rusted frames and then scrapping them.

 

Well i don't know the gap in years between the new mini and the old one, nor do I know the size difference. But if they're the same size then a redesign like the new mini would actually be close to what i'm talking about. Im not asking for them to make a carbon copy of the 1st gen one, but a very similar redesign of it in the same size class.

 

If you do find them they're still asking 14-17,000. in my area at least. Im guessing that part of this high price is a higher Demand than supply.

Seriously, though, I like Toyota trucks for their small size, and yeah they've recently gotten huge, but that's the trend with all modern vehicles.

...until of course they release a new line of "economy" size "ultra-compact" cars that are the same size as the compact cars 2 decades old.

I even think the first gen taco is a little big for my liking.

 

Yep I like the second gens but imo they are getting to big they need to make the first gen with a turbo diesel and some sick upgrades but have the quality construction of the first gen.

 

I've owned 4 Toyota 'mini' pickups from 1985 through the present. The 'mini' size is ideal for my purposes. The 2005+ 'mid' size is not.

I've had two situations where I was in the market for a new vehicle since the 2005+ Tacomas came out. In both cases, I considered and quickly rejected them. In one instance I bought another 2001 - 2004 Taco, and in the second instance I got an entirely different vehicle.

If Tacomas stay at their current size, I don't expect to consider - much less purchase - a new Tacoma again.

Don't worry, When the bottom drops out on the economy in the u.s. they will pull production from north America and build them in japan, like they used to.

 

Yup. When the tree totaled my 93, I explored options, and pretty much just wanted to get the best loaded 04 (newest 1st gen) I could and plan to keep it forever, but I couldn't find any in my spec! And I didn't want to buy from a dealer. Just for a reality check, I test drove an equivlalent spec 09 at the dealer. Wow, plastic. I remember the thin, flexible plastic on the inside of the doors, and the sea of cheap-lookgin plastic in the middle dash. And it was too big (I am not a big guy), wihch sucks around town and in parking lots for a daily driver. And the price? Forget it. then I found my '01, and jumped through hoops to get it. Happy.

That said, even 1st gens seem to have more quality issues than my pre-Tacoma 93...leaf springs? steering rack bushings? pop-out window latches? And I won't even mention you poor guys with the frame rust issue (oh, wait, I just did). This stuff ain't rocket science.
