The drain pan I used forever developed a leak, so I bought a new one. Come to find out if you don't position the new one perfectly, the shape of it "deflects" half of the oil hitting it onto the ground next to it. Lost probably half a quart that way.

I feel I would have been better off cutting a 5 gallon pail in half.

I've done something similar; I used the same one for a couple of years, and apparently at some point a mouse/squirrel nibbled one edge of it. Didn't notice until I'd already pulled the drain plug on the truck, though, and oil started pouring out of my pan just as fast as it poured out of the truck. Made a real mess in my driveway at the old house.

Until you trade your Tacoma and buy a Ford because apparently they still haven't figured out how to mount the oil filter vertically...
    Is your filter horizontal?

Mine was in the garage, so I used a hose, dish soap, and a push broom to get it all into the drain in the middle. As far as I can tell, the drain is just a hole in the concrete to the dirt underneath (doesn't go anywhere) so I'll just pull the grate when I remember and shovel out a foot or so to throw away.

When i was at benz all we used for ajy fluid was the vacs and their number one for a sludge in their engines. Sludge is a thing of the past if you keep up on your OCI with new 0w20 oil synthetics. Either route is better than jiffy lube. If you need a hand PM me. Never go to jiffy lube we take our company fleet there and they tried up charging me 5w30 oil from fords recommended 5w20 because my van has "high" miles (62,500) f them go to toyota with a competitors coupon locally and theyll match it.

My mom had a Taurus with the 3.0 Duratec V6 in it. Oil filter on that was at a ~45° angle and you had to reach behind the exhaust manifold to get to it. It would drip directly onto the exhaust without fail when you loosened it.

Both Dodges and the Kubota have horizontal filters. I haven't changed the oil in the Ferd myself yet, because I got free oil changes/rotations for the first 24k/24months when I bought the truck because I told them that's what Toyota does

Edit- Although the '69 does drip on the passenger side header when I pull the filter.

Sounds about right... My old Ranger used to have the filter directly over the starter and it was mounted horizontally. They put some stupid plastic shield over the starter to help. I used to have to loosen it from below the truck, rest it on that plastic shield, then pull it out from the top because there was too much in the way below.

The F150 has a horizontally mounted oil filter directly over the front cross member. If the truck is level when you change your oil, it will all nicely flow off the front of this little drip pan they put over the cross member. I don't have a lift and I can't fit under the truck without the front being on ramps, so the truck is never level when I change the oil. You'd probably laugh at the size of the oil catch pan I use to get all the random places the oil drips from...

I had Subaru H6 engines with horizontal filters, but there was absolutely nothing below them. So, you could loosen them a bit, let them drain out, and take them off with no mess.

The Tacoma 4.0 filter is definitely my favorite, though. Makes perfect sense.

The ford 3.0 was the friggen worst you can have thr stupid filter slip witj oily hands cross terminal the starter and be in for a shocky surprise. The 5.0 is the easiest thing ever well thought out

Beats the ej205 the filter is surrounded by the exhaust manifold aka ring of fire.

The 4.0 is nice but the paper filters are the new norm now, what a PITA. Tacoma 2.7 is a shit show, Seth will you shed him some light lololol

This is what I use when I do the oil change at home - easy and simple to use. The oil filter drain I have I clamped a hose to it that drains out the bottom of the truck... sometimes I'll put a plastic cup to catch it other times I just toss a few paper towels and it works mint. Spray down the hose with some Brake Clean after i'm done and all good as new.

Have you seen the 5.0 filter location on the F150? It's just plan stupid! In terms of an easy oil change, the 4.0L Tacoma wins for me with all the vehicles I've owned.

My garage floor is grey concrete, though! :goingcrazy:

    Maybe I should paint it...

Easiest ever for me was actually my 1st car. 1989 Dodge Aries K w/a 2.2 liter rap-o-matic. The filter was right on the side of the block, and since it was mounted transversely it was staring you in the face as soon as you opened the hood.

After that though it's definitely the '84 and the '69. Horizontal and super easy to get to, with all of the room that they have in their engine bays.

It wouldn't be proper oil change without some speedy dry...

I have been hearing this squeak/tick noise lately, seemed to be twice with each wheel rotation on the passenger side. Only noticeable with the passenger window open and driving against a wall at 25 MPH or less. Very faint. Didn't change with braking.

Jacked the front end up today and heard a noise that I think was it when I spun the tire. I think it was the retainer on the axle nut shifting back and forth as the wheel turned. Driver's side was solid. I played with the cotter pin a bit to get the retainer to stay in place and I don't hear it when I spin the wheel now. If that's really what it was, that's wild.

Of course, I also found out my driver's side inner caliper pistons stick and that wheel drags more than it should as a result, so I'll have to take care of that next.
