After talking with Michelle about that grinder, she suggested calling the police and report it as abandoned. I'll make that call tomorrow afternoon if it's still there. Fuck that guy.

Cops can do more with the plate than I can, but I found several 'tree doctor' variants registered with the SOS: http://www.sos.state.co.us/biz/BusinessEntityCriteriaExt.do (dunno if that link will work - well it takes you to the search but you have to put in the names yourself, can't link results). There's only one specific to Fort Collins, and it's parent is Verdad, Inc. and THAT traces back to an office up on Link Lane and a PO Box with the name Mike Verde.

I also notice he doesn't appear to be on the licensed arborist list for Fort Collins http://www.fcgov.com/forestry/arborists which... well as a business owner and contractor yourself, I'm sure you know what that means.

Where did you find this guy, and why did you hire him again?

My neighbors with the damaged fence hired them last Thursday to trim their cottonwood tree.
I noticed the stump grinder hitched to the truck, and being an opportunist, I asked if they could grind the stump if they had time.
They agreed, didn't think anything more if it. They also removed a dead tree from my neighbors on the other side, that's where all that brush in the truck came from, and when the chipper seized.
So no, I didn't do any homework on this. To be honest my shit came out all right. I'm just left with a pile of shit out n my driveway and no contact info.

I wonder if he just knocked on their door.

We have a few of those guys in Pueblo that just go door to door. "So, I was just driving by and saw that your tree could use a trim..." or "your house could use some paint" etc.
They are shady AF and it's fairly obvious they just work til they get enough money to get high and/or drunk on then move on.

No idea on the phone number. Starlord said it was disconnected. That address is a residential condo though (I've looked at the complex before). For that matter, the SOS info I found might not even be the same company, or the guy could have bought it off them and never repainted. Good lesson, never sell used business equipment that still has any of your company identifying stuff on it.

Ah, that makes sense. My father (who has theoretically all the necessary licenses, just sayin') gets a fair bit of business that way - neighbors of the people he's referred to come over, or just people driving by stop. He doesn't even have a sign or number out/on the truck or anything. If he did work on both sides, then it does sound like what Magic said, some guy canvasing the neighborhood for work. If you really wanted to give him some shit, send that pic of the chipper to the city and ask if he's licensed, maybe even go into some detail about the damage and say you want to file a complaint. We both know how big a shitstorm for him that could turn into.
