Dealer says 100k trans flush?

Took the Tacoma down to the dealer to get a trans flush (66k) and the service writer said not to worry about it and get it only needs it at 100k... sounds like a few too many miles to not change a fluid of any kind when it comes to a vehicle. Anyone get thiers done at the dealer before 100k? I'd do it myself but I'm not a fan of flushing out 1/5th of the actual fluid if the dealer has a machine to fully flush it out. Any input will help. Thanks guys

 

I do alot of towing and hauling so I went ahead and had it done at 62k. Someone on here has a tread on what his fluid looked like after 60k compared to the new fluid color. It was shocking the old fluid was dark dark red, while the new fluid was a bright red. IMHO if you tow of haul alof of weight I would have it done at around 60k.

 

I believe many on here have. Have you tried a search? There is a detailed thread about how to do it yourself as well.

they're right... generally not needed unless there's a reason (unusal use, etc) until then. of course, it never hurts (well, sometimes they do a bad job, so it could) to do it earlier - but you are generally spending money needlessly doing it that early.

 

i prefer taking it to my independent mechanic so it's flushed properly... it's pretty reasonable that way.

 

Just get into an arguement with your wife and open up the wrong plug. I call it the "Accidentae Preventitive Transmission Service" lol.

 

You might want to check with your mechanic. I called 2 different mechanics other than Toyota and they said they wouldn't touch my trans. because it was sealed and after the fluid was fluished you had to hook it up to a computer or something. I'm not sure if they just didn't want to mess with it or what, but I ended up taking it to Toyota and had them do it.

 

Ha, they have no clue what world class trans fluid even is, and if they use the Valveoline equivalent it still isn't the same viscosity as the world class stuff.

The 2 Gen. Tacomas have synthetic tranny fluid designed for 100,000 miles. I too wanted it done at 60,000 miles, (as I had it done then on my '01)... my service department assured me the new 2005+ trannys are fine for 100,000 miles... and when my '05 reached 100,000 miles I had it flushed... It never gave me a problem and I drive it hard on and off road... Calif. deserts and Baja California.

btw, i wasn't jumping on you about it, it's always good to know. i try to do certain things myself - it was just the guy was asking about flushing it.

If you don't do a lot of towing, i would wait until the 100k. Trans fluid is dyed red, eventually the dye runs out and it turns darker. Just bacause the fluid is darker than new doesn't mean there is a problem. Now if it's almost black and stinks really bad, that's another story.

 

My dealer says you should "service" the transmission every 60k miles and by "service" they mean to drain/fill the pan, not flush the transmission.

 

dude.. chill out - your the one assuming my mechanic is an idiot. my mechanic uses the same fluid toyota uses - i just checked. in the future it's a good idea to ask what fluid they're using before jumping on their back.

I'm sure all he meant is that our Tacomas use a new Spec "WS" fluid and most independent shops aren't aware of that and use the older Toyota ATF Type IV.

Not questioning your mechanic, but do yourself a favor and make sure he is aware that the required fluid is the new Toyota WS fluid, and that there is a very specific procedure to follow to ensure the fluid is at the correct level after refilling - even if a flush machine is utilized.

We're only trying to help, and a new transmission is very costly. In the end its your truck and your choice.

 

This is NOT true with the '05 or newer automatics. The first service is at 100,000 miles now, and that is a complete flush/ change of the synthetic fluid. I get my trucks new and follow the warantee recommended servicing and all work is done at my dealership. The only thing I do more often is oil changes at 3,000 miles instead of 5,000 miles... not synthetic engine oil.
