Such systems exist (search for "bypass filtration") but it's barking up the wrong tree for Tacomas. The engines are already pretty bulletproof. Keeping your engine oil clinically clean won't help when your rear diff grenades or your frame rots away.

Thanks for sharing this post I just gave the dealership that I bought mine from a piece of mind about the same subject I'm almost at 5k the first appointment after a 1k I thought was to change the oil instead he just wanted to tighten shit up whatever! Then the second time at 3k was for the recall. And so I called today regarding the 5k oil change he says it's just to rotate the tires I am convinced that this dealership does not value me as a customer so I will be taking my business elsewhere I will never drive a vehicle for 10k with the same oil in it never thanks again for sharing.

The TRD is a synthetic media vs the standard paper element. Plus the metal ends on the TRD filters help me sleep better at night.

Yes to the filter. Both diff's are getting new fluid at 1,000 miles.

Cartridge filters are exposed. You can now see what's always been in a canister filter. So now people worry

The mexican guy who assembled your engine didn't clean his hands after visiting the strip club the night/early morning before, and left you a gift in the form of stripper dust.

    Wow...

With my 2nd gen, I changed my oil once per year, and I am pretty sure I didn't change the oil for 2 years straight at a few years in a row. I put 15-20k miles on my 2nd gen per year.

My 2nd gen went to almost 200k miles before I traded it in. I never changed one timing belt, one spark plug, one injector and I changed the air filter one time. I never changed the coolant, I changed the brake fluid one time, and I never changed the rear brake drums.

Oh, and I took it to the shop a total of zero times. I bought the car in 2009 and everyday until June 2017, I put the key into the ignition, and it ran without issue on some of the hardest traffic conditions in the united states (bay area traffic).

You guys are doing way too much maintanence and wasting a lot of time and money on virtually bullet proof engines.

    Get a grip!

You ran 100k coolant and 30k spark plugs for 200k miles, and don't know that the 4.0 has a timing chain instead of a belt and you're giving advice? You got lucky.

The 4.0 isn't bullet proof. It's a good engine but has its faults and requires maintenance like any other. Mine blew a head gasket at 120k even with good maintenance. Many people with 2003 to 2005 4Runners experienced the same thing.

I had an I4. I don't know if it has a timing belt or chain because I never cared.

That one has a chain and requires regular maintenance as well. It's one thing to tell people that they're dumb for doing too much preventative maintenance and it's something completely different to tell people that they can ignore everything and still be OK.

I had a 1991 mr2, and treated it the same way and received the same reliability.

I don't think it's possible to be "lucky" twice.

I know what maintanence is supposed to be administored. When I was a kid, I nearly killed a eg Civic and I warped the head of a Honda prelude because of poor maintenance.

However, I treated my Toyotas nearly the same way, and there were no issues. I am sure most people have the same experience. it's the forum posters who obsess over everything and make so many modifications that suffer the reliability issues.

You could have paid them for service not covered by the standard Toyota package.

Bro it might help if you take 30 seconds, read what Toyota care is and then you won't be disappointed.

I paid for an oil change at 5000 miles. They were glad to do it. Got the free one at 10000. Just gonna go the recommended intervals now.

Exactly. I get such a kick out of these threads where people are smarter than the engineers who designed the truck. Some of these guys act like it's a badge of honor or something that they can do something that takes about 30 minutes for a high school dropout to learn!
I have had the dealer change my oil in the past 12 new vehicles I have owned. Seven of those have been Toyota. Close to a half million miles. Never had a problem.

See, people get all bent out of shape because they read those "horror" stories about what dealers can do to screw things up. They forget about the sheer magnitude of the jobs the dealers get right! There were 17 MILLION new cars sold last year. The number of people who change their own oil has dropped below 5%. That means over 16 million people who bought a car last year had their oil changed by a shop!

I read a study awhile back on why those few people change their own oil. The answer? Because that is one of the very few things people can still do as far as tinkering with a modern vehicle.

Hey, I think it's fine if you want to change you own oil. Just don't think you are smarter than the guys who designed it.
