New Duratracs and vibrations/wandering

Just got some new GY Duratracs 265/75/16 on my 09TRD DC about an hours ago. I had the stock BFG Rugged Trails 265/70/16 on it and have the 5100's set at 1.75.

Prior to the Duratracs the truck drove perfect. Got new tires on and on the way home there was some vibration in the steering wheel and some wandering on the road. Tire are at about 38 psi all around

Would this be an alignment issue, a balance issue, or what? Thanks in advance

 

well first of all 38psi is too much, but you probably just need rebalencing.

 

i'd get them rebalanced....could have thrown a weight...and definitely lower the tire pressure. and its just me....but i always get an alignment with new tires....just for piece of mind. yours may not need it....a simple rebalancing and tp adjustment may suffice just fine.

i'd start around 32 psi....especially in the front and go from there.

 

recomended tire pressure is on the sticker on your door.

 

What is the load range of the Duratracs? I'm sure they just need to be re-balanced.

That's with OEM tires.

The easiest way to know for sure is the chalk line method. Draw a chalk line across the width of the tire tread, drive a couple hundred feet, and check the see how the line has worn off. If it isn't worn evenly, then your pressure is incorrect. Worn off in the middle but still showing on the outer sides = too much pressure. Worn off on the sides but showing in the middle = not enough.

BTW I let some air out to 32 psi and a HUGE WOW!!! It drives a million times better!!!!

 

Mine does this also,I thought some of it was due to the tire shop putting all the weights on the inside

 

When you get a chance, let me know how those tires are affecting your gas mileage. I loved the look, but thought the tread and weight would kill my mileage. I went with the hankooks (lighter). Thanks!

 

Sure will. If I am correct the GY's are 45 lbs/each and the Rugged Trails were 37 lb/each. Also from what I have heard the speedometer was a little off with the BFG Rugged Trails and the 265/75/16's get it closer to being true...I dunno

I keep track of my mileage everytime I gas up and had been around 20.8 MPG....I'm certain it will definitely go down for the above said things but hopefully not much.

 

Switching to a 265/75/16 tire definitely brings the speedo closer to the actual speed. My GPS and speedo are now pretty close to the same.

 

Just an update on the MPG from my Duratracs. With the stock BFG rugged Trails 265/70/16 I was usually getting around 20.8-20.9 MPG. I drive 114 mile round trip a day, 95% highway, and with a very light foot...60-70MPH with an occasional 75 here and there.

With the new Duratracs 265/75/16 I filled up today and was amazed that it was at 20.3 MPG. I still need to get them re-balanced and possibly an alignment but I was VERY happy. The looks are awesome and there is a little hummmm at around 60MPH.

 

Another factor is the larger more spread out tread on the tire = less contact with pavement = squirrely feeling. This will get much better in 100miles or so once the tread evens out a little.

 

i agree by goign with your door jamb sticker, its a good rule of thumb to use as thats based on your trucks weight. i run 30psi in my 265/65r17s front and rear though the door sticker says 29 with 247/75r16s and it rides great.

 

Damn, mine dropped a few MPG with my 265/75/16 BFG AT's. I get around 17.8 now.

 

i dont think 38 is too much man, i run 45psi dd on my 265/75/16 and get a mpg better

i had balancing issues went to discount tire said fix it or buy my tires and i will buy new ones and maybe not from you. they ended up fixing my vib after 20k miles. instead of putting the weight on the inside of the wheel they put them on in the stock fashion on the lip of the rim and it fixed my shakes hope this helps
