I always flipped that on them. It's essentially a negotiation tactic they try to use. Turn the tables and say "well you're the one that deals with this type of issue every day so please let me know what my options are, what are some examples of things you've done for others in similar situations? what do you consider reasonable given the scenario? You're the one who knows what options are available and what the constraints are."

After reading through some of this thread, I'm glad I cancelled the appointment I had at the first of the month and told'em I was going to postpone until October. Considering I'm on my 20k service and I only have 6k miles, I figure it can wait until they get this crap figured out. They can't hold the vehicle hostage if they don't get it in the first place!

Good call. When I spoke to my service guy the day he took it, the answer was "4 to 6 weeks." The Toyota lady's answer was "4 to 6 weeks longer."

I think they've been watching too much Penguins of Madagascar.

I called my advisor yesterday. Day 15 without my truck...
No call back yesterday or today. Very frustrating to go through this mess.
Edit. Just called dealer and no parts yet.

Well I took my TRD Off-Road in today for its weeping diff, just to get it documented and maybe re torqued since it isn't on the recall list....now I am in a Chevy Sonic....cool....

Mine was the first Off-Road that my dealer has seen with a leak. They called Toyota, and were instructed to keep my truck and to not touch the diff at all. They are sending the regional field engineer and "another Toyota representative" out to examine my truck sometime this week. My adviser said he isn't sure what is going to happen after that... maybe torque it down, and order parts, or maybe something else. When I asked how long I would be out of my truck he said that he would like to say a couple days, but he wouldn't give me an estimate.

    What a fun day! :bananadance:

My TRD OR is weeping as well.

Right now I can't tell if I am happy to have my truck because of a negligent dealer who doesn't care: "eh, looks fine, you're not on the recall, come back when it's actively dripping"....or if I should be worried for my life.

I am kind of bummed and happy. I wasn't expecting to lose my truck today, figured it would get retorqued and documented, and I'd be on my way. At least this way I know that they are taking the issue seriously. Plus, if it gets Toyota reps out here to look at it that is better for everyone in the long run. #OffRoadRecall

You should always be worried for life, just know what can happen and expect the worst and plan accordingly. My guess is your taking it to a more properly owned dealer who either has to many to fix or has been instructed not to take any that are not on recall, or like you said they don't care and will worry about only if they have to. Sorry to hear this wish they were all the same but people suck most of the time.

In my opinion we can all moan and groan about the issue (myself included) of the way this is being handled and about toyota taking the truck hostage. But the biggest issue in my opinion is not having your truck sitting in the lot but the whole safety aspect of this recall. A lot of people are dodging the dealership so their truck does not get grounded due to this recall. But imagine you driving your truck on the freeway going 60-80 mph and your rear diff seizes and locks, not only will that create a big mess but it can possibly be life threatening both to yourself and others around you. No bueno. I guess a safe bet is to dodge the dealership to avoid having your truck sit in a dealer lot but at least keep the car in your garage and drive another vehicle till the repairs are made especially if you have an active leak. But cooperating with the dealerships request does put you in a "paid for" rental.

In my case, I refused to leave my truck at the lot for reasons I strongly expressed during my visit at the dealership. They agreed to make me take it home for safe keeping, and they put me in a rental. I am not excited about my rental as well but it is paid for and my truck is sitting in my garage with no chance of adding anymore damage than the current diff leak. My first rental was an altima. I brought it back because brakes needed servicing, now I am in a ford escape. lol

Just my opinion. No ego bashing intended.

I wonder if Toyota is increasing their liability with their handling of this recall.

Someone has a bad rear diff leak but reads on TW about the stories of impounding trucks and waiting months. Thinks no way, I'm going to wait until I can drop it off for a few hrs., just like the official recall says.

Rear diff locks up, causing accident and several deaths of those around him.

Driver says there was no way I was taking my truck in with no one getting their recall fixed.

So is Toyota liable for these deaths?

    The recall envelope says "Urgent."

I have not seen any urgency from Toyota.

I feel the same way. I guess the urgency is to get these trucks out of the road. Im guessing toyota will lose a pretty penny on rentals alone. My rental for last month was a bit over $800 for an Altima.

Had the bolts retorqued on mine, no leaks at 5000 miles. I have Amsoil rear end fluid to put into it, now wondering as it is known that syn. oil wll tend to leak easier with wore seal, etc. If the machined surface is not machined right, feel like I risk of leaks with the Amsoil could be a like greater. Figure if it does all I can do is drain and refill with stock oil, just hate wasting stuff. Has anyone put amsoil in thier trucks diff?

    Took mine in yesterday, leaking, not bad, but enough for them to keep it. Got a Dodge Journey :( :{
They said "maybe" a couple weeks, so basically that's a lie?? I'm in Washington, Bellevue to be exact.

Took my 2017 Limited (9/2016 Mexico build date) in for 5K service, T-SB-0077-16 Rev 1 and rear diff. recall on July 1st at Renton (Washington) Toyota. I called the service dept. today for an update and I got the, "parts are ordered and we're just waiting for them to arrive and could take up to 2 months" answer. I asked how many other Tacos they have for the recall and my service advisor told me they have 8 on the lot and these are the first Tacos they've had since the recall came out. What's been the wait times so far with other Taco owners in Washington with the recall?

Week and a half without truck so far. Got a 2017 4Runner, so not complaining too much. Getting depressed seeing 60 days plus possible.

I was told shortest time period would be 3 weeks. Longest 70 to 80 days.
