I'll ask my radio guy what other radios 'could' work given the dimensions of the bracket and pocket, but I wouldn't be able to test them. And quite honestly, the TM-281 is a solid radio. It's probably the best radio for off-roading. Not sure why anyone would need anything more for communications unless your a full ham'er hobbiest and want a 70 meter radio or dual band.

So.. there are a few radios that may work but it's really unknown unless we had a ton of radios to test fit the bracket, and the fit within the pen pocket. The pen pocket is only so deep too, so other radios may fit the bracket and the pocket size, but stick too far up for asstetics.
Long story short you'd have to go down uncharted territories by venturing to other radios.
Just a reminder, this radio is compact, powerful (65w), user friendly (for the most part), has a forward firing speaker, and has a bunch of mill-spec ratings! And it's relitivly cheap.

I have this radio. I have not installed it yet because I have not found a spot I like. I like the location of your bracket. I like long walks on the beach. My favorite color is green.. blah blah blah... take my money!

Do you want to partisapte in the verification of fitment? It's a free bracket (see post 35).

I bet if you retitled the thread, or created a new one with "free" in the title, people would be all over it.

Update bump.. I found someone that will test fit some brackets. Once I hear back I'll make any changes needed and will start a production run. The only thing that worries me is that because no one wanted a free bracket, who's going to want to buy one. But I'm willing to spend a few bucks and see we can make this happen.

I will be suppling just brackets at first and then depending how things go, I'll spend the time and money making a nice setup package.

its not that no one wants a free bracket, I love free shit. That is pretty radio specific. Used on the less desirable kenwood/motorola vhf uhf radios. Most hams are going all in on Yaesu or Icom with a remote head and mounting the brain box under the seat or behind rear seat. Its a great idea, but it seems pretty radio specific.

I'm not saying that another radio couldn't work, I just don't have every radio made to test fit. IDK whats so 2001 about this radio. It does exactly whats needed, communications. Now I'm not saying this is the best radio in the world and yes the Yaesu's are super fancy, but for 90% of the people that just need to talk, the TM-281A is quite good for such a compact size. And at 65W too!
Another benefit to this radio is its forward firing speaker. With this setup, you can't see any kind of wire or bracket other than your mic cable and the speaker fires straight up for the whole cabin to hear. Now with something like a remote face is super cool and even more compact (just the face), but you have to run the cable to the box itself (under the seat or??) and you need to run another remote speaker and wire to yet another open spot (more occupying space). The instal for something like that is without a doubt more impressive if done right, but way way more involved. So really with the face plate and the remote speaker, its probably a little more difficult to run a cleaner approach for what it is. Again, this isn't the only way, but it ranks top shelf for a clean instal and communication simplicity. Because lets face it, when your out wheeling, are you really jumping channels, pinging relays and talking to people outside the group? Maybe a race event, but this radio holds something like 200 pre-sets.
Being that the cabin in our tacos can be small and cramped when loaded up, and real estate being costly, I thought something like this that takes up space otherwise not used, a vary desirable approach.

Sorry about this rant, just board :pccoffee:

I received your brackets a couple of days ago. Possibly next weekend I can get to test fitting them and cutting out that rectangular crappy coin/dirt/dust/junk collector. Thanks again! Oh yeah, Adrian helped me out with this. Didn't even know about this until he hit me up. I keep you posted on which ones fit best.

A little late, but you can LISTEN to HAM all you want without a license, you just can't transmit.

I just passed my HAM tech test Saturday and the teachers/proctors were amazed I hadn't gotten into the game at all yet.

Slick setup for first responders too. 50 Under sounds totally reasonable.

Edit: I'd be a tester if I had a radio for it. Currently I do not right now. @joshtxedition13 Would this fit your CB setup? Maybe you can test it out.
