I have done some team 12hr races and a few 6hr solo races years ago, and the vibe was really laid back. There was camping next to the race course, some cowbell for sure, handing out peanut butter sandwiches, glow sticks and camping lights for night time. I got some strange looks when I ate a baked potato during a lap, but I did have a few riders ask if I had another one too.

Endurance races are where I learned that I am a faster rider at night, I just go hard and ride as far as the light, where in the day time I would sometimes slow for impending obstacles or danger. Plus the 12hr events usually ended with pizza and beer, so even more incentive.

If you think the MTB scene is laid back, you should try cyclocross

It's the hardest 50 minutes of racing you'll do, but the vibe is awesome. Hand-ups while you're racing often include cash, bacon, cookies, or beer.

I take the joke a step further and race singlespeed. Good times!

The team I rode with was almost exclusively CX guys and gals. Fun bunch and could really put the hammer down on road rides. I wish I had gotten into that discipline, but I needed to buy a new road bike and just couldn't stomach the cost of a CX bike on top of it.

I feel like I should be posting pics:

Yeah I dont blame you for wanting to get out of it, once it starts not being fun anymore, whats the point. I still like it, and am only doing 1.5 - 3 hours a week, 20-50 miles a week, and have no desire to train for any races. Ive met quite a few nice people who do it and they want to recruit me to their groups, but Im really just out there for the fitness aspect of it, its excellent cardio, and virtually no wear and tear on your body. After seeing some of the MTB vids online, Im thinking about trying that out now too.

There is nothing more enjoyable than a single speed trail bike! Just ride and don't worry about gears!

SS is cool, it's a different style of riding. I feel like a kid on a bmx! You learn to carry speed and control your braking.

You can find a good used bike on CL or pinkbike even mtbr. Check your local bike shop the guys mite be selling something.
You can pick up a hard tail with a front shock cheaper the a FS bike. If your just getting into it. Get a better quality bike for less money

So I was thinking I'd get a long bed, so I could just lay my 29er in the back of it without taking the wheels off. I looked up the bed length, and then measured my 29er to be sure. The damn thing is still longer than the long bed!

Any of you guys fit your bikes in the bed with both wheels on?

And should I just get the shortbed then? They seem to be a lot easier to find. I test drove a longbed the other day, I loved it but it had all kind of extra accessories and options on it, it stickered for almost 41k!

All of my large frame bikes easily lay down in the bed of my accesscab, the front wheel just gets kicked up a little. If you want to mount them straight front to back with something like a pipeline rack, get a rear facing mount so you can turn the wheel slightly if needed.

Even though I have a few racks I could retrofit to the bed, I just lay the bike in the bed. If someone else goes, all the bikes get layed down with a moving blanket between them.

Used the rack for more space in the bed to drink beer while shuttling.

I see, sounds good. When I was in Moab we had an 01 extended cab 1st gen, and we just laid the two bikes down in the bed with a piece of foam from our bike cases between them. Super easy, and fit great. I realized later on that the 1st gens had longer beds, 6.5 feet.

I have a 42x17 gearing. Seems perfect for flat trails and a good cadence. I have added bar ends and clipless pedals since this picture.
