I have an iPad mini that I never use. Going to use that as my dedicated NAV device.

 

You do need about 30 gigs of memory for the full CA trail maps file. I have the 16 gig Ipad and it doesnt have enough space for it.
You will also need a GPS hardware plug-in so it can read your location when your off phone data.

 

It's a little small on a 5" phone screen. Ipad mini is the perfect size. My phone is 64GB and my ipad is 128GB. I only load up the map I'm using which is about 4 GB.

 

Hmmm... Mine is a 32 gig ipad so probably not enough memory to download the entire file. Can you specify just certain locations to minimize the download? Also, what type of plug in for GPS? Does it plug into the lighting charger port?

Just set it on your dash and charge it up once a week or before a trip.

 

Madison has an IPad (32GB) and my dad just got one I could probably barrow for trips.

 

An old android phone is about the cheapest way to do it using locus maps. All you'll need to buy is the trail map or download it from someone.

 

I need to find out how to crop the mapped section I need. I have lead navs on my phone but not on my computer.

 

Do you need a GPS hardware plug in for your iPad or does GPS work with LeadNav as is?

 

This is basically for the wifi ipads. You just connect through bluetooth. I haven't bought one yet, but it pretty much just works in the background. Can use it with every device so you don't heat it up like crazy from the built in GPS.

If you have a wifi ipad you will need it.

 

I am assuming that even if you have 4G on your Ipad, if you get into a place where there is limited service it would be a good idea to have an external GPS?

 

Ya you can crop California trail maps to what ever section you want, pretty easy on the program when you download it. I have been using on my garmin, just had to buy a 32gb card causr I wanted to have a larger section on it. I use Locus maps on my phone.

 

That is why you put cali trail map on your device. It is an offline map. Your built in GPS will still work without data. Tablets that don't have GPS will need an external GPS.

Basically you have an off line map and an app that drives it.

 

Im thinking of getting once I upgrade. I've read the best external gps to have is from Dual Electronics. Pricy though!

The wifi only verison do not have a GPS. But let me check about my mini 4.

 

Yup still correct. You need to have the ipad with the cell module to have GPS.

Ipads do not have GPS chips so like someone mentioned in a previous post you will need to get an external chip.

Sometimes you can find deals on prepaid Android phones. You don't need to activate them, just connect to your wifi network to download offline maps. Most of the LG prepaid phones will top out using a 32gb microSD card. Fry's always has sales on 32gb microSD cards, lowest I've seen is in the $7.99-$9.99 range.

I got a Samsung Galaxy prepaid for $16 on clearance at Target. When adding a microSD card that one will top out at 128gb. Fry's had a Samsung 128gb microSD on sale once for $29.

Like another member mentioned, the phone screens might be too small. I know most of the big name Android tablets have GPS built in. I have an Asus that can take up to a 64gb microSD card. I know some newer Samsungs can take 128gb.

If you already have an iPad then it's probably better to get an external GPS chip.

If you don't have an iPad then I think it's better to get a used Android tablet or a new lower level one. Just research to see if they have GPS and what the max capacity microSD card they could take.
