What material is being used on the color lines? They look like they could be the aramid, but the ones I got don't look thick enough for steel covered in plastic.

 

It's a heat resistant rubber, I'm not sure of the exact name of the material but I've never had an issue with the lines.

I received my lines a while back and installed them on my 2003 4runner Sport edition last weekend. First off, they are a great upgrade, my braking is much improved over the stock hoses. It wasn't the easiest thing I have ever done, so I thought i would relay my experience, hoping it will help someone as much as everyone elses helped me:

Front lines:
I used the following:
1. Liquid wrench penetrating oil and let it set for about 2 hours with multiple applications
2. A heat gun to heat up the connection
3. Flare nut wrench

Overall the front process went very well. I only had one hitch, the side closest to the caliper was a bit of a pain to get lined up for some reason, so i just took the bracket off, connected everything up, bolted the bracket back on and tightened the connection. No other modifications required.

Rear Lines:
This was a lot more "fun"

I used the same procedure as the front lines with the penetrating oil and heat, but two of the flare nuts just wouldn't come loose. Thankfully they happend to be the two on the bracket attached to axel, so rather than ruining the steel lines or the flare nut, i just disconnected the hoses from the upper mounting (forward of the axel), the connections at the calipers and unbolted all the retaining clips for the steel lines and the bracket attached to the axel. The whole system came off with a little maneuvering and I was able to easily break the connections loose by placing the bracket in a vise and heating them up with the heat gun. I went ahead and attached the connection lines to the bracket prior to installing the whole system back in place.
** this did bring up one question, the connecting lines had the expected shape on one end, (flat on the sides) whereas the other end was completely round, this didn't match up with the stock lines, which had the same shape on both sides. Was this by design? Not a big deal, they worked ok, i just bent the clips a little more to provide a little more tension and ordered some extra clips to add one to each in the future(just a little overkill really.)**
Now that I had the connecting lines done, I moved onto the caliper lines. These did require a small modification to install. The stock lines are slightly twisted/angled upwards at the banjo head and seated inbetween two metal "guides". The replacement line comes with banjo head at a 90 degree angle. Again no big deal, I just put the old line and bolt back in (just to keep metal shavings out of the caliper) and cut off the topmost guide (just a metal nub really) with a dremel. Everything lined up great after that.

I then installed speedbleeders all around and flushed the system.

Brakes feel great! And I only ended up bashing my head once while working under it!
