New guy wondering about Axle Flange Bolt

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and new to owning a Tacoma. My name is Brian and I live in the White Salmon, WA area. Very nice to meet you all. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

I'm replacing the upper and lower Control Arms in my 96 Tacoma, 4WD 3.4 L.

I'm anticipating having to cut the bolt on the UCA's because they fairly rusty and I've read this expedites the process.

I can find the gen 2 part number, but I am having trouble finding the gen 1.

Here is the part I need, but just for a gen 1 Taco; (90105-A0095)

Looks to be part number 90105-14105 and rings in at about 10 bucks.

Just out of curiosity, why are you replacing the entire control arm assemblies? You can replace the bushings, ball joints, etc while retaining the arms themselves generally.

 

Can't speak for the OP, but I replaced all of mine due to the simple fact that it saved me the hassle of having to press in new hardware into old crusty parts, plus minimal downtime. Cost wasn't too far different, either. Oh, and I can't tell a single difference in quality of my Moog control arms vs. factory.

 

I would try taking the bolts out first, before buying new parts...

Would be good to know why op wants to replace all the control arms... if you just need new bushings, that can be done for 1/4 the price, easy. Or upgrade to poly bushings. I burned my oem rubber bushings put with a map gas torch, and the poly ones slide right in.

Taco control arms don't just ware out and snap. Ball joints, yes, but control arms? No. Unless you have specific damage to them, I'd leave them and worry more about your bushings and ball joints.

 

That's pretty much it. I'm no wizard when it comes to truck repair, but I have been learning steadily with the help of a good friend. I brought my truck in to two different shops, both shops said they would replace both the upper and lower CAs instead of just the bushings (I already purchased the bushings in anticipation of replacing just those). That, combined with my friends opinion to replace U & L CA made me think that was the correct choice. Cheapest quote I got from a shop was $1500...I bought MOOG parts for $387 after shipping.

Yeah, shops will charge you an hour of labor for 10 minute worth of work. and make money on the parts sale too. Total rip off.

A shop with a press can do it in probably an hour. But why do that when they could make you buy an entire new set of arms with preinstalled bushings, and make it a 10 minute job and STILL charge you an hour of labor.

Just search around for tips on how to replace the bushings, it's not that hard...
