I think I may have accidently stumbled upon a very simple roof rack design based on an existing product. I bought some 1x2 10 series extrusions from Tnutz to build a low-profile roof rack. I was out in my garage taking some measurements and happened to look up at my overhead storage. There it was right in front of me this whole time; a simple design with two cross bars and heavy gauge wire grid as the platform.

Holds 250 (uniform) pounds, but that's likely hanging from the ceiling. In a rack configuration with stouter cross bars, I'd say it could handle 300 pounds. Way more than I plan on putting on my roof.

I've been thinking about this for years and may put one on the camper roof. Yakima or Thule used to sell a rack made from welded wire. Then I saw them at Home Depot (IIRC). The ends are turned up. I think the Yakima or Thule one had them turned up on all sides.

Saw those when I was researching ideas. That little edge flipped up is just enough to keep things in place.

I was thinking about getting two of these. $32. The difference between these and the Hyloft ones is the Hyloft grids are double-reinforced on the outer edge.

Those are nice. Painted black too. Also heavier gauge wire. I may get the other one for the larger size. Hopefully all my crap will fit inside the camper and I won't need one.

I plan to just put my Plano case full of recovery gear, shovel and ax, and two larger containers for sleeping bags, clothing, dry food storage, stuff like that.

Don't worry about it. 1KD-FTV is all you need to be concerned with ;)
