Im looking for a camper to live out of for the next year in my 2016 long bed offroad tacoma. I'm gonna be working and staying in the tahoe area and will be dealing with lots of snow. As much as I would love a four wheel pop up camper.. I need something that's gonna be not as obvious that someone is staying in because I'll probably be posting up in ski resort parking lots and random parking lots.. this means no pop ups/out to avoid drawing attention to myself.
I've been checking out capri campers and travel lite.. although I'm not sure what all would fit with the travel lites.. if love to have a shower and porto potty minimum in it.. but I could make due with out if need be.. any one have any input on what camper shells would fit or any other brands that are affordable... I'm looking for cheaper and would say 15k is my cut off. Any input would be appreciated! 20170715_140924.jpg

    No suggestions on campers...sorry.

But... Man... If i was single with no kids I'd love to camp for a year...but no parking lots... Seems like that would ruin it...

If your working why not camp in local state parks? Or just find some woods lol.

I think if i had 15k to spend... And it was just me?... Id get a nice ass RTT, pressurized onboard water in the truck bed for showers, and a hitch toilet... I'd be set with thousands left over!!

Then i could afford to camp in the woods and enjoy myself. Build a fire... Catch some fish.... No trailer to pull around... New places all the time...

Damn.... Now I'm dreaming.... Sounds wonderful. I have camped all my life. Never more than a week though... Well... Unless you count being in a tent with 40 other soldiers as "camping" lol

Not sure if this is available in or near Tahoe, but look for a long term campground ahead of time. Parking lots might lead to losing your spot without notice. Campgrounds will likely have a shower and toilet or waste hookup if you get a trailer. Taking a shower inside is asking for some water damage. Look at used 15-18 foot trailers, should run 10-12 grand.

I would use the truck simply to haul supplies to build a home like Dan Price's for $5,000 a year, especially if i was planning to live long term in the back country....

This is what it means to live like the warrior poets in tune with nature .....

I lived in my 01 Tacoma for my first northeastern winter. The cold was a bitch, and I did survive strep in the passenger seat wrapped up in a sleeping bag. But it never stopped being fun. And as a perpetual bachelor, I'm always tempted to sell off what I've accumulated and do it all over again.

You could get an enclosed utility trailer. Lots of camper conversion videos on You Tube. Fairly cheap and could be stealthy.

I'd forget about the water hookups and shower and whatnot. Get a cheap ass gym membership and sleep in their lot in your truck with a cap on it.

Walmart is also supposed to be good about letting people rack out in their lots.

Or as others have mentioned, use actual camp grounds to camp. Most are super cheap; some are free. Even if you just use them occasionally to break up your presence at other locations.

Edit: as someone who Backcountry camps I'd like to suggest you try out and get some quality cold weather gear. I don't know if you truly appreciate how cold 20° is.

Alabama not used to having all the public land ehh, I'm sure he gets to camp wherever he wants whenever. Note he said he would be working, with the objective to stay at the ski resort to ski.

One of the travelers at work converted his Taco into a camper. Built a platform in the back for sleeping and under for storage. Made a platform for a cooktop and got a yeti. He spent under 3k on the entire set up. (He got a shell). He rotated gyms for showering each night and Walmart allows overnight parking.

I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
Its not a slide in but....
I saw that Airstream is making a fiberglass trailer in '18, same size and specs as the current "Basecamp" for est. $10k

Its tiny but easy to tow and hide; plus its an airstream so how bad could it be?

Thanks for all the input guys but I guess I could/ should clarify a little bit more.. I've already seriously considered all those options and what I've decided is on a slide in camper.. I'm a paramedic and my new job has a schedule of 2 days on and days off.. I might also get a volunteer position with a local fd which has the Same schedule which would mean Id only have 2 days off.. but either way.. I don't need a place to really go home to or base camp out of... if I don't volunteer than I'll end up working part time ski patrol during the winter so I can get paid to ski and do what I'm good at! But yea, with my days off while the weather is still good i plan on traveling and camping around. Very little set up would be nice and something that I could still get around with ok on decent 4wd roads... in door shower wouldn't be necessary but it's be nicer the colder it got as winter approached.. I've got a friend that works at squaw in the winter and lives out of his van.. he just crashes in their parking lot but states that security does say shit sometimes so he advises as low profile as possible.. he goes and showers at local gyms or sneaks into the resorts spa.. but he says that if I worked ski patrol, id have to get up and ready before the sun's up which would make thatvmorr difficult at a gym.. also areas of tahoe got 15+ feet of snow this last winter wish means driving a trailer around is out of the question.. also the drive from squaw to where id be pulling my normal shift would be a long ass drive during the winter and that's not even including snow driving or tourists.. so staying in their parking lot in a camper and having my own shower makes the most sense

That being said.. I still might just try to get a cheap trailer and post it up at one of the year round campgrounds but that kinda kills the whole dirt bagging/ ski bum thing I'm trying to do.. but it sure sounds easier.. just not as fun.. anyways.. campers!! That was the whole point of this post.. I want to know what campers or cab over campers people have used and liked with their tacos... if love to make something but I just don't have the time right now because I'm working full time jobs 9 hours apart....
