2017/18 Taco TRD Pro - Daily driver?

Now that's a good/safe parking spot.

 

I don't understand why a Camry gets 300hp and we don't. We definitely won't see it in the Tacoma though. At least not in this generation.

Oh, I understand. That's funny. I usually just offer to drop my family off at the door so I can park in peace.

 

Yeah, I am not going to go out and buy a new Tacoma, if there is a new engine option. I am fine with mine now. I would like to see the Tacoma get some upgrades though.

I don't like how the Tacoma name is being dragged threw the mud right now. I guess I am a fanboy.

 

I have a recently made Pro, here in Canada as well. It was made in May 2017.

I have a long combined commute in traffic worse than Toronto. I drive about 45,000km a year. 2-3 hours a day, average 6 days a week.

At first the seat was bad as I'm coming from BMW and VW both of which have better seats.

I researched about seat regulation and realized that there are rules specifying what size of person the seat must fit and I am well within that 98%. I'm just shy of 6'0" and 175lbs. So I went online about how to properly adjust a seat. No shitting you. I've been driving over 20 years and never had my seat set right.

Now that I've trained my body to a healthy ergonomic seating position I can sit there all day and not get sore. I prefer it to any other vehicle at this point. I'm used to it now.

With regards to the engine and driveline. I've had 100% complete opposite experience that guys like Smitty.

Driveline is very smooth. Shifting is exactly when I'd anticipate it and millage is amazing for a vehicle of this size and weight. I've never even needed to floor it and that includes merging which I do every day. Maybe this is because I come from a long history of diesel and plan ahead better rather than relying on a V8?

I did an early oil change and early rear diff fluid change. Next oil change I'll get the ATF changed as well.

I realize it doesn't have much low end torque and that's fine with me. I didn't buy a V8 because I don't need huge low end torque every time I hit the gas pedal.

If you drive with the flow of traffic, defensively and under 140km/h I doubt you will have any trouble.

In my opinion Toyota completely nailed this engine. It's smooth, efficient and easy to do maintenance on. I expect it will prove to be very reliable. It feels slow and underpowered compared to the Ram 1500 with a hemi I was driving for a bit, but it's more than twice as good millage. For how much I drive, Millage is what I prefer.

I only go off-road mildly as this is my DD I take excellent care of it. It's beautiful to drive and I love it.

I was told TRD Pro Colors for 18’ will be White, Black and Blue only. Hope that helps!

 

You know jsinnard, I think your sentiment nails it. For every person that buys this truck (3rd GEN) or honestly, for anyone that buys any vehicle at all, then hates it or complains about it, shame on them. If you are one of the 3rd gen owners who complains, you are the fool for buying it and you either made a poor financial decision that was uninformed, or you let someone sell you into a vehicle because you don't have a spine. The lack of presales qualification with some people of a new vehicle is bewildering to me. Everybody has different needs, you obviously didn't think of your own if you sit on the forum and complain about the mistake you made.

 

OP it's an awesome daily driver and i couldn't be happier with it. i also just came back from a 2500mi road trip through NM, CO, and some great trails in the Rockies. totally amazing everywhere she went. i sold my long time daily Subaru after i got the truck, that's how good it is for a daily IMO... but i don't live in the big city anymore.

 

I live just outside Charlotte NC across the border in SC and have about a 40 min commute to Uptown Charlotte (yeah, we call it Uptown instead of Downtown for some reason). I love the commute in my Pro. I came from a 2015 OR which I also loved, but the Pro gets better MPG ... averaging 19-20mpgs in the Pro with load E 265/75s VS 17-18 mpgs in the 2015 OR with load C 265/75s. I have also had it about 2 months with 2k miles on it and it has began to "learn" how I drive and has gotten progressively better with the shifts ... now it is pretty f'n smooth. I would say go for either a Taco Pro or a 4Runner Pro ... either is a good choice! Also, people ragging on the 3rd gen, don't listen to em'. I have had 3 Yota's, the 2015, a 1994 and now this one ... they are all awesome.

Thanks man! Yep ... those are the 265/75s. They are BFG KO2s. I've had BFGs several times on different trucks and they are the most tried and true. I've had generals, Falkens, michelins and the BFGs just last longer, are quiet, look good and are solid on all terrains. I considered the Goodyear Duratracs since they come in load C, but I've never had them and heard they don't last as long and are a tad louder.

 

Thanks for the response ... I was actually looking at the Duratracs too since it was a Load C range... But definitely a lot of taco owners seems to be leaning towards the BFGs KO2s for quite some time now.. The pic you posted just makes it look so meaty and more aggressive looking.. will be swapping out my stock tires for these... thanks again.

Last question: Did you get it re-aligned right away when you swapped tires?

 

I actually had the dealership order the BFGs when I got it and I paid the difference in tires. Came back a few days later for mounting and balancing. I'm actually not sure if they realigned considering it had been only a couple days and the size difference was not huge but no alignment issues at all. I'm assuming they did or at least checked.

dont even sweat it, do it. I live and drive in one of the shittiest places in the US, socal traffic. I commute 31 miles from the Inland Empire to Irvine (Orange County) and it's a great vehicle to be in while in traffic. I've had my share of cars and I'm enjoying this one a lot. Gas mileage as others have said is surprisingly good on the freeway, keep it at 70 or below and you'd be surprised. City driving just sucks in general so YMMV

 

Mine is a 2nd gen (2015 Pro) but I DD it and I would recommend it. I love my Pro and the 3rd gen pros are sweeeeeeet. I vote yes. That being said, if you absolutely don't need a truck, the 4 Runner Pros are one of my favorite vehicles ever.

 

Thanks man! I F'n love it. I love the quicksand too and nearly trading my 2015 OR in for a 2016 quicksand OR just like yours (with the Pro grill too) late last fall. Worked out well in the long run I suppose.
