So I live in the prairies (flat as hell). I want to use my 4x4 just to keep it lubed or whatever (recommends driving 10km a month in 4x4). I know it's bad to engage it on pavement and grass. Where I am from it's pretty mild terrain. Where should I use my 4x4, just on the local gravel roads or should I drive hours to search out more suitable terrain?

Anywhere that the tires can slip is fine for 4 wheel.

You can use 4wd on pavement/grass in a straightline with minor/wide turns. Nothing tight or driveline bind could be an issue. I just throw mine on when im on the straight highway a couple times a month between my little town and the big city. Thats all she wrote.

Broccoli thank you for the clarification! What is driveline bind?

Basically, when u turn the inner tire will do a tighter/shorter radius than the outer wheel. And so we have a differential which lets each side rotate at its own pace. In 4wd we are basically locking the diff in a sense so when turning the inner tire wants to rotate the same amount as the outer and will cause the truck to litterally hop/skip. This can cause differential damage and possibly cv issues as well. Hence only using it on icy/loose road so any slippage/binding will occur on loose/icy road.

Sorry to hear that lol, unfortunately I haven't been to Manitoba enough to know where any decent places are around there (I'm in Cochrane, AB) but like was posted before you can engage 4Hi on pavement just be cautious of turning.

Gravel roads are the best place to run 4x4. You don't need water or hills. You just need to move your drivetrain in the front to keep things lubricated.

I've never met anyone from here but they seem like a decent group. People from all over but mostly Calgary crowd, they have semi regular meet ups at Peter's for shakes.

Do you need to know, or care?
Then you should have no problem finding straight roads. :)

Just thought you were american for some reason.

I'm the only one out of my two sisters that doesn't have dual citizen for the US as my mom is from Brooklyn NY.
Instead I've got dual citizen for canada and italy
