A sample is a sample. 200 complaints compared to the GM Twins. Do we need to bring up all of the other Consumer Reports and Consumer Affairs reviews? How about the other major review outlets that have shredded the Turd gen? This guy claiming that one or two people do all of the complaining is out to lunch and that's exactly what my point is proving.

CR is a biased joke with their opinions up to the highest bidder. Along with JD Powers. Is there really an award for projected reliability? I'm dumfounded with people who think these companies are the holy grail.

Reading comprehension. I said you were one data point and 199,999 would be different. I stand by my statement that only a few of you here are complaining. Wait... let me define "few"... Would you agree that a "few" is 5%? So what is 5% of 300K sold? 15K? There is a few dude. Again, you are one tiny data point, and CR has been thoroughly busted as far as reliable car data. It's like taking all the members here and treating them like experts. They are not. You need to realize you are in, even with all your issues, the vast minority. Really. You and 15K others.

A few hundred maybe. Good luck running the search on 3rd gen issues threads over the past 18+ months and trying to quantify all of them but I'll give you a hint chief, it's more than "a few"...

Fair enough. You did buy the truck when the 3rd gens first came put so nobody knew it had issues yet.

This same stuff happens on the CivicX forums. I own a 2017 Honda Civic sedan in Touring trim and you hear of a problem here or there on the forums and everyone generalizes it to mean that the 10th gen Civics are absolute trash, when they aren't. Consumer Reports is nonsense and didn't rate the Civic high due to its infotainment system, which there is NOTHING wrong with other than an occasional slowness and a preference for whether the AC controls should be included in the infotainment system or whether one prefers physical dials and knobs. Yes, it absolutely sucks that anyone has to deal with issues with their vehicle they spent any amount of money on purchasing, but to think the 3rd Gens are some type of misstep and are bound to fail is a little much at this point. I own a 2017 Tacoma and have had zero issues, rattles, whatever. Let's keep things in perspective.

Ironically, consumer reviews rated the 2016 model year 3.5 stars based on 220 reviews but consumer reviews rated the 2017 model year 4.3 stars based on 67 reviews on edmunds site.

It seems most of the unsatisifed 3rd gen owners are 2016 owners. Toyota did fix the CPS problems on the 2017s but many are complaining about the transmission and rear differential issues still on the 2017s. For the first 5000 miles I didn't like the way the transmission shifted either but after I completed my 5000 mile service and got the TSB transmission reflash it shifts great now. I'm overall satisfied with my truck and hope the ones with issues can get them resolved.

At least Toyota has you to come to their defense and dismiss or minimize all of the issues with the truck. As if they weren't doing a good enough job of dismissing the issues already.

Unfortunately we aren't ever going to get accurate numbers from anecdotal sources, but the fact remains that this is a major recall (228k) that has had folks in rentals for months. That number doesn't yet include OR versions that seem to have the same problem.

You'll white knight for Toyota no matter what. I'll stop bashing them when they acknowledge and address my issues. That's the difference between us.

I could care less if it were Toyota or Coca-Cola. My goal? To show people that what they read on silly internet forums is usually false, especially when it comes to OEM problems and issues. I also want to show them that, even though there are several of you that artificially inflate your issues by posting the same thing multiple times in multiple threads, there are a vast, silent majority that have absolutely no issues.

@smitty99 keeps using this forum as if it were the definitive word on the Tacoma market. Nothing could be further from the truth. Example: How many have the diff howl? Reading the posts here you would think every other person. The truth is very few, as evidenced by the few who even know about it.

#protip: If you take your vehicle to the shop, please do not mention you read about it on the internet. They will take you even less seriously. Same with doctors. Ask some of the pros (J Demello, etc) in their industry how often they check out opinions on an internet forum. There is a big difference in looking for fact and looking for consensus and sympathy on a forum.

The only thing your example is evidence of is your tendency to minimize legitimate complaints about this truck.

There is a fairly large sample-size poll that shows over half of respondents have the howl. That's not artificially inflated by dissidents and nay-sayers anymore than its artificially deflated by apologists and fanboys. AND YOU STILL minimize it as "artificially inflated". Simple percentages, even if they were off by orders of magnitude, highlight that as an issue--a legitimate issue. Next you will tell me that "diff's just howl get over it."

You wont acknowledge legitimate issues without large caveats like "stuff on the internet is largely false" and "its exaggerated". So, while charging ahead with your noble goal of fighting false information on the internet, you've become an apologist that dismisses any claim outright that doesn't fit into your view of the situation. It's like you actively avoid absorbing or entertaining information that contradicts your Toyota-is-the-greatest worldview. I believe that's called cognitive dissonance.

@tacoflavoredkisses1 that rear diff poll is inaccurate. There were people admitting they voted and didnt have the issue or even own a 3rd gen. Just because someone votes in a poll doesn't mean the results are accurate.

Absolutely not. Of course they are legimite issues and should be reported, questioned, discussed or whatever. My point is one person posting about diff howl a hundred times in a hundred threads. That strategy is useless. The first time somebody reads it they will pay attention and give it the attention it deserves. The tenth time they read the same thing they just skip over it. The hundredth time they read the same thing from the same person, that person just becomes a whiner.

I read a thread today from a guy wanting to know which model to get. What did I find? One of the guys lamenting and listing every problem he had in multiple posts. Not even caring or answering the thread topic. That is when the Butthurt report should go out to them.
If you have a problem, discuss it. One or two times.

Understood. And it's a forum poll at that... however there are about 1k people that responded. Even if those numbers are 50% inaccurate and you extrapolate that out, using 2016 sales numbers only, that's 45k+ trucks. That's not trivial.

Look, I get it. That poll isn't scientific. We don't have official Toyota numbers because it's not in their interest to disclose them. But that poll and thread is enough "smoke" to not patently dismiss a fire might exist..which is what hiPSI tends to do around here.

Dang. Wish that dealer was near me. They don't have parts for my diff. And don't know when they will get them. My truck didn't even fall under the recall.
