I have a high pitched whistling sound that appears to be coming from the passenger side view mirror at highway speeds when the windows are down. Sometimes its so bad I can't keep the front passenger window open even with the radio on. It's not the LCA issue, mine came plugged from the factory. I even tried putting painters tape on the ones that you're not supposed to cover and that didn't quiet the noise. It's also not the howl/kazoo sound. There is never any noise on the driver's side.

I assume air is getting through some gap or seam, but there are so many that the painters tape process of elimination is taking forever. Maybe, its not the mirror. I was wondering if anyone had and solved this problem and could point me to the offending spot.

I've been driving around all night. I swear I tried putting tape everywhere. I can't take it anymore. I guess I'll make an appointment with Toyota....

Not sure exactly. Maybe starts around 50mph. The faster I go, the louder it is.

Read the link below and let me know what you think. If this is your issue I hate to say it but join the rest of 3rd gen owners. Mine is driving me crazy and so far no one has gotten a fix. I'm opening a case with Toyota corporate on mine. My truck is not on the recall list either but when feathering on the throttle between 53-63 the howling/whistling will run you out of the truck.

Thanks! I like it a lot except for that god forsaken whistle. I don't think it's the rear diff. I only hear it when I have the front passenger window open. If I open any other window it's fine. The truck is silent when the windows are closed. Also, the noise isn't connected to the throttle just the speed. It's the same whether or not I have the pedal down.

Mine is too (now). If you hear this between those speeds it may very well be your rear diff so keep an eye on it. Some only hear it with the windows down. I'm sure there are a lot of folks on here who can help so jump in somewhere and start asking! I hope it's not the rear diff but it could be. Mine makes the noise between those speeds nonstop now so long as my foot is on the gas. Does the noise go away when you take your foot off the pedal?

Are you able to have someone sit passenger and record a video and post it on YouTube? Just to get a sense of the sound and what not. Or is that process insane? Insane enough to try fix your whip? :p

Well there goes that theory. I bet someone on here will figure it out. Best of luck to you, OP. I'll keep an eye out just because I'm curious! Peace.

I finally figured it out! It is in fact the passenger mirror. The cover doesn't snap as tightly as it should. Compared to the drivers side, there is a slight gap on the inside where the cover and the rest of the mirror meet.

After taking it off and putting it back on, it still doesn't sit right. I cut some self adhesive velcro strips and stuck them to the edges of the inside of the mirror cover along that seam and that has reduced 90% of the noise. That should do for now. I have my 5,000 mile service coming up. I'll ask Toyota to look into replacing the mirror or providing a more permanent fix. I'll let everyone know how that goes.

Try 200mph tape or something with less fuzz/ texture. 200mph tape works for NASCAR, it should work for a Tacoma.:burnrubber:
