Was thinking of doing the same using Mishimoto cooler, without fan so I don't over cool. Although, I don't think it would be possible to over cool in Hawaii.

Like how it's setup, and the reuse of oem cooler for power steering! Looking to do something like this as well, and converting all the lines to AN.

He kept it really simple. I like the genius of it as well.

I could have easily done AN fittings and hoses since I have plenty laying around from aircraft. I decided not to go with braided hose and flared fittings. If I got it correct, the trans cooler lines as They designed the transmission are the return lines. They have flow, but minimal pressure.

The barbed and clamped hoses have been working well up to this point. Also, to convert the oem steel tubes will require either a flareless type compression coupling with the opposite end AN, or a steel AN fitting needs to be brazed, silver soldered or welded to the tube.

If you are commenting on my setup, yes I wanted simple. The most difficult item was fabricating the supports for the cooler while keeping it as if it was oem.

In the linked topic about the remote filter, one guy was concerned about the location. If you look close the location is well protected.

Installing the trans cooler in front of the radiator did increase the coolant temp on the scan gauge between 2 to 4 degrees, but max I see is 190f. I am sure it reduced the AC efficiency slightly, but it remains cold.

Possibly a motivation was reading about and seeing photos of the "strawberry milkshake" failures where the radiator fluid mixes with the trans fluid. Maybe not as common on our trucks, but still possible and expensive repair.

If anyone decides to do something similar, keep in mind that you want the trans cooler ports oriented to purge trapped air. Mine are both at the top. Eficency wise this is the second choice. If there was room, I would have installed the cooler with one port at the top and one at the bottom.

Regardless, if the cooler can hold an air pocket, the fluid will not be cooled. Other than that, all the best with your mods.

We have had almost two weeks of mid to high 90s with humidity constantly above 50*

    Its hideous.

But the winters can be days of -10-20*

So fan on a switch means, it gets no use at all, until i see the temp where i don't want it to be

With these lines to the cooler having minimal pressure, leaves me wondering what size AN lines should be run? I assume at minimum the same diameter as stock, -6 or -8. Would a bigger size line be detrimental as it could result in pressure drops that could affect the transmission function? As for the oem steel tubes, I was thinking of changing those out as well, but will probably hold of until I can figure out what type of thread in on the transmission. In the mean time, like you said, some sort of compression fitting will be used.

I believe the mishimoto one that I was looking at has the intel on the bottom, outlet on the top to purge air.

Or you could also upgrade to a Ron Davis radiator with twin SPAL fans :). @Torspd are those fans pushers or pullers on your ron davis?

Not to sway the topic...50% humidity must be rough.
Oem will probably measure as -6. Compression fitting, good luck, probably metric. Get an AN 816 in steel and braze it on the tube. Done and no leaks.

FWIW, my cooler is nothing special. I can look up the brand and PN later. The company makes coolers for many big name suppliers. I think I paid $50 new on EBay. Was a single new cooler a shop was selling.

No way. Florida was brutal. Used to spend my summers there.

So in my research, i've come up with a plan. I'm going to order the mishimoto trans cooler with fan. I'm going to see where all i have room to mount it, hopefully where it won't get fucked up by mud/water/snow/ice.

I'm going to have my transmission serviced again. So i know i'm not having any contamination.

My understanding to run the cooler in series is that I want the trans feed line to run into the radiator, then have the return line come from the radiator to the top of the aftermarket fluid cooler, then the return fluid feed line back to the transmission hard return line under the motor.

    My next questions are:

Won't this cooler increase my trans fluid level?
How will I know how much it increases?
Does the trans fluid cooler get primed with fluid?

Also, i'm going to wire the fan on the cooler with its own relay and switch.

I used this today to on my ultra gauge for my '07 as well . Thanks for this

Do you know if there is a per trip average mpg meter ? Where it resets each time the ignition is turned off

I would think once you have everything in, I would do a trans fluid check. I would also assume cooler should be primed as best as possible to prevent any trapped air.

There is, it's at the end of the gauge/page options. You'll want to look for 'mpg srt'.IMG_4929.jpg

Run start is the time the trucks been running since the key was turned ? Then it resets ?

The mpg trip is the one that resets on that screen ?

Trp is manually reset, srt is reset every time you turn the truck off.
