No they are still different. Spec u y pipe portion includes a v band clamp in the middle instead of flange connection as you can see in the middle. V band clamp is a more expensive style of clamp much less likely to leak under stress than a clamp connection. Also, the spec u includes equal length y pipe sections before the v band clamp for equal back pressure across all cylinders allowing for smoother engine running.

The mark 2 y pipe is the normal y pipe with a few changes made after myself and a few other early adopters called Gadget back and spoke with him about clearance issues both underneath the truck, and in trying to remove the pipe. The spec u is a complete street performance pipe for this truck. Add in the power extractors and you have a full race exhaust with no cats or any restrictions of any sort! The y pipe is not up to that level of performance, it is primarily for making noise in reality.

Thanks for that info. Other than the clamp to connect to the rear section of the exhaust, is there any other difference to consider? I ask because I'm looking for better throttle response, not so much high RPM performance and want to avoid rasp in higher RPM range.

I'm waiting on a tune from OVTune, which I know is the biggest upgade to throttle response, but as I"m reading here, the cats are quite restrictive, so I'm hoping to just eliminate the rear cats since they aren't monitored. I still want to keep stock muffler to keep it quiet. I'm one that does not feel this motor sounds good under any exhaust, but that's my opinion.

Actually as I continue reading over both descriptions, they seem quite proud of the full exhaust system in that it is "tuned", whereas the Y pipe alone seems to be a "cheap way out". I guess it's more of a "do it full or dont do it at all" kind of situation?

If you want to avoid rasp you don't want the y pipe under any circumstances, that's the one thing it does is give a raspy sound. The spec u is very clean in comparison, sonically speaking.
Additionally, because of the improvement in engine smoothness, you have improved low end torque as a result. I also notice a lot less lugging around parking lots as mine used to lug anywhere below 1500 rpms but now I have to get down below 900 rpm to see any lugging and typically it only happens in 2nd which i would expect.
The spec u is another part I'd highly recommend as a part of improving the overall enjoyment and drivability of the Tacoma!

Meaning, the full exhaust setup they offer?

Also, are you saying that even with the full exhaust, you still get rasp?

@Cheers007 nope, there is no rasp with spec u, but there IS with the Y pipe and any exhaust. I had three different mufflers to try and quiet it down to no avail. Didn't want to go multiple muffler route so tried the spec u on Gadgets recommendation based on my desire for high performance and quality, with a nice sound. The spec u delivers on all counts if you ask me ;)

Thanks so much. I'll study them more with headphones vs laptop speakers, but seems like I am hearing a bit of rasp for my liking personally. Especially when you downshift and the RPM's are catching up to wheel speed, that's the most pronounced.

Again, need to listen with headphones.

By any chance anyone with this Spec U exhaust in the Dallas area? I can hear/ride in person.

Yeah in the video it sounds raspy but in person or on speakers that have bass you'll hear that it's actually a nice low hum you're hearing. Laptop speakers definitely don't do it justice. This is by far the least raspy of the aftermarket exhausts. I've had the flowmaster duals with no y pipe, flowmaster duals with y pipe (LOUDDDD), y pipe with mbrp turn down, and magnaflow muffler on turn down exhaust. Of all those setups the spec u has by far the least rasp, especially when you consider it still removes the cats. I wouldn't mod if I were you at that point.

Also, it's important to note that the second downshift was into second gear at about 35 mph, getting up to about 4k rpms for the purposes of being a little dramatic for the video so you can hear it. You obviously wouldn't normally do that downshift every time so that sound wouldn't be there normally.

    Thanks so much.

Maybe at some point if you get a chance, could you record a normal acceleration with the windows down in the same manner as you did here? I have an Auto so I won't really be hearing the same thing as a MT style gear change. Plus this truck is just silly in high RPM on the stock tune, so I don't even bother.

Just installed it. Absolutely love it. Not noise under 3000 rpm. Nice rumble between 3000 and 4000, and sounds incredible over that. Even though it had a few hiccups I'm happy.

2.5 to 3 hours start to finish. Had to remove the heat shield from the left part of the OEM Y pipe to get the pipe out. And the exhaust hangers were a pain. Otherwise seamless.
